Retiring Maude Reed and Dr Kenneth St John to be honored

A reception for retiring teacher Maude E Reed is planned for May 20 at Hubbard High School. Another reception will be held June 10 for Dr Kenneth D St John who will retire as superintendent of schools after this year. Rotary heard North High coach Andy Sarinchak speak on life behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia. He described family fear, sharecropping, daily hygiene, priesthood limits, and poor housing. Rotary noted perfect attendance by Stan Hayman, Bill Hulbert, Rudy Bender, Ray Kyle and George Zenevich. Kiwanis will host a tenth anniversary social for Austintown Poland and Vienna clubs on May 18 in Cas.

Trustees Schedule Public Hearing On Street Lighting

Hubbard Township trustees will hold a public meeting within 30 days to discuss street lighting for the Petroleum Masury district residences. A residents group asked for lighting, and trustees will also request progress reports on fire hydrants from Sharon water company. Trumbull County engineer will provide paving estimates for two streets in Fairmont Housing Development. residents may petition after estimates.

Mayor Names Habitat Board to Lead 450000 Center Drive

Mayor Albert Sauline announced the Hub bard Area Community Center Board of Directors to oversee a $450,000 fundraising drive for a planned community center. The 12 member board includes James Bosco and Charles Ferrick with staggered five year terms, plus other appointees and city officials. The group reports to the city council which adopted the board creation on April 16 and includes representatives from Kiwanis Optimist Rotary and other local organizations.

Lights Approved For City Traffic Plan And Other Measures

City council approved installing traffic lights at N Main St near Myron and Moore Avenues with about 1000 from state highway improvement funds. They adopted licenses for transient dealers, set a $25 fee and daily fines, and backed plans for Hubbard concert band with Peter Pagano as director. A refuse management ordinance, burn hours, mesh dump containers, and resident-only city dump hours were approved. Fire data showed 47 grass blazes of 51 calls. Plans for Hubbard Estates playground use and West Park Ave road work were approved, along with storm sewer fixes on Parrish Ave. A May 21 special civil service meeting was scheduled, retirement age raised to 70, and Community Center Board terms accepted.

AAU Track Clinic Draws Athletes From 20 Schools

An AAU track clinic at Hubbard Junior High Elementary School draws athletes from about 20 schools across Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Top performers from colleges high schools Olympic teams and AAU will assist in coaching with registration at 8 30 a m and gates opening at 10 30 a m over 400 student athletes expected.

Mayor Fines Truck Driver for Overload

Mayor Albert Sauline fined Harry M. Jackson of Piqua Ohio one hundred forty five dollars and costs in the mayor s court on Thursday evening May 3 for driving an overloaded truck. James A. Rotell of Farrell Pa failed to appear. Paul J. Kulow of Hubbard Road Hubbard was fined one hundred six dollars and costs for speeding.

Retiring Hubbard Educators Honored at Banquet

About 115 teachers and staff honored Hubbard School System leaders Dr. Kenneth D. St. John and Miss Maude E. Reed, retiring after 88 years of service. Dinner at Sharon Elks Club featured gifts including a portable TV and a $100 orchid-tucked bill. Nick Sostari presided as Hubbard Classroom Teachers Association presented the gifts. William C. Craig delivered the after-dinner speech on Anatomy of A Pun.

Teaching Career Ends At 57 Yrs Maude Reed Longtime Hubbard Teacher

Maude E. Reed began teaching English in 1905 in the Hubbard School System at 18. She taught 57 years, moving from Hubbard to Coalburg in 1906, later earning a BA in teaching, supporting her parents, and living at 188 Brookfield Rd. A 1924 Kent Normal School graduate and 1940 degree completed. The district sought a records check on her tenure.

Dr St John Shifts To New Academic Role At Atlantic Christian

Dr St John begins a long teaching career with Hubbard schools rising to superintendent in 1954. He will join Atlantic Christian College Wilson North Carolina as associate professor in education and psychology in September 1962 after earning a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1960 and a master’s from Kent State in 1947.

Brookfield Township Debates Youth Rehabilitation Center
