Hubbard High School conducts four day tests for grades 9 through 12 with two hours daily covering writing reading mathematics and citizenship. Principal Buchenk says district ranks fifth in Trumbull County and supports mandatory testing for graduation.
Hubbard A public hearing in City Council chambers is scheduled for Tuesday March 12 at 7 p m to seek input from residents on disassociating the city from the township for the sole purpose of section o r A prior hearing drew little citizen input with about 20 township residents present. Council President Andrew Tuc ciarone said the council wants to hear city residents views, while township spokesperson Sue Goterba urged city residents votes to count. City residents have long voted for township trustees and clerk since the city’s incorporation as no action was taken to remove it from the township. A resident argued that since township residents do not vote for mayor they should not vote for top trustees, prompting continued council hesitation until constituents are heard. City Treasurer Daniel Madeline noted an eight year old attempt to make the change, vetoed by former Mayor William Colletta, underscoring the need for thoughtful consideration.
Hubbard The Board of Education approved the district's participation in the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding. Carl Morell said the aim is to obtain equal funding for all districts, noting a disparity in wealth distribution and favoring the per pupil basis if legislation passes.
Hubbard moves to disassociate from the township via ordinance and county petition. Inskeep notes hearings must be aired with three public notices, unless an attorney general opinion says notice is unnecessary. City officials and engineer should attend hearings. township action requires 51 percent of township voters. Residents fear loss of representation and dollars.
Thirteen year old Donald Newell begins a drive to establish a Hubbard youth center after attending city council meetings as class assignments. He has 280 petition signatures toward a target of 500, with mayor backing and teacher encouragement highlighting active student civic involvement.
In conjunction with Ohio Right to Read Week Hubbard High School invites adults and students to submit original writings on the Persian Gulf War. Entries may be interviews, poems, presidential journal, or letters to a future time capsule. Submissions due by 2:30 p.m. March 11 to Mrs. Ellen Kolat or Hugh McBride.
