Joseph Baldine, Hubbard’s long serving mayor from 1946 to 196? died suddenly at 64. A merchant and civic organizer, he modernized water and sewage, founded Hubbard Promotion Inc. and led anti gambling raids while steering regional mayors to collaborate. He was a fiery political figure in local Democratic circles.

Arthur Magee was sworn in as Hubbard mayor at 3 p.m. Saturday after the death of Mayor Joseph Baldine. Magee ordered the flag at half mast for 30 days and closed city offices until Baldine's funeral, canceling Monday's council meeting. He, his wife, and two children live at 540 Princeton Ave. The council has 30 days to fill Sauline's vacant seat. Magee, a Democrat, previously chaired the council and leads the Landtro Co. He remembered Baldine as a longtime servant and noted their past political ties and shared involvement in city progress.
Kent State University conferred degrees on about 2,000 seniors and graduates in its 61st annual spring commencement held last Saturday, June 15. Three recipients earned master’s degrees from the graduate school: Jo Ann Deak of 199 Franklin, master in education. Roxanne Henry of 340 Grandview Ave., master in education health physical education and recreation. and Dennis Wine of 433 Brookfield Rd., master in special education. Deak and Wine also hold bachelor’s degrees from Youngstown State University while Henry earned her bachelor’s degree at Kent State.
A May period report shows Hubbard city and township suffered seven fires totaling 20 050 dollars. City incidents included a house, flush and apartment fire for 20 000 dollars. township grass and house fires accounted for 50 dollars.
Mrs. John Egelsky II of Brockway Avenue Yankee Lake Village was elected and installed as president of the Hubbard Area Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association at the June meeting at the Ramada Inn Youngstown. Also installed were Miss Marjorie Greenberger vice president Elaine Rich recording secretary Elizabeth Scott corresponding secretary Joseph Dubyak treasurer. Mrs. Rovnak outgoing president received a past president pin.
Hubbard residents race to enter the 1974 Homecoming Queen contest. Eligible are girls from high school grades 9 to 12 in 1973-74. Entries due this Saturday at Gene's Style Center or with organizers at 636 Jerry Dr and 207 Viola Ave.
Hubbard city council authorized issuing notes and bonds totaling 710000 to upgrade the waterworks plant. It also appropriated up to 6000 for repairs to No 6 well and rezoned Hubbard Girard Road from commercial to residential at last week’s meeting.
Gold Cross Ambulance halted local service here after operating at a 1500 dollar monthly loss since January. City refused a subsidy, directing customers to the Youngstown office. The Hubbard closure followed funeral directors ending service over rising costs. Nearby Puerto Rico hotels impose one dollar daily energy surcharge due to higher electricity rates.
Hubbard Classroom Teachers Assn. and the Board of Education ratified a two year salary deal raising base pay from 7000 to 7400 for each teacher for the year starting Sept 1. The agreement runs through Aug 31 with only the salary schedule to be renegotiated next summer.
