The Hubbard Homecoming Queen Committee extended the 1962 queen deadline to Friday June 22. Eligible entrants are single Hubbard area girls aged 15 to 18, with forms returned to the City Building or Hubbard News office and postmarked by June 22.
Wilson Patton owner of Patton Food Market introduced a trading stamp concept by the Hubbard Area Chamber of Commerce. Ellwood City’s example, where stamps are sold by merchants and redeemed for goods, was cited as a model to boost business amid unemployment in the steel area.

City officials announce a $460000 public works program expected to improve infrastructure. The plan includes upgrades across streets and utilities, with funding details and project timelines to be released next week. Local leaders advocate swift progress to aid residents and businesses.
Mayor Albert Sauline will present a $460000 public works plan to the city council, seeking 90 percent federal funding. A new bill before Congress proposes 50 percent grant and 40 percent loan, with House approval needed. The Senate has approved $750.9 million for public works, including unemployment relief. Sauline said the area may qualify. Project costs would split as roughly 46000 local, 230000 federal grant, and 14000 long term loan.
Nancy Pregs, 17, of 1¢8 Franklin Ave, was treated at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown after collapsing while swimming at Glen Echo Park. She recovered and was listed satisfactory Tuesday. The Hubbard Senior High School office hours are set for June July and August.
The yo-yo craze returns as 2394 yo-yos sold in Hubbard and Hubbard Township in three weeks across six stores. Ben Franklin Store sold about 1400 units, Paor Drug 460, Guy's 24, Hayman's 44, People's 300, and American hardware 132. Prices range from 29 to 49 cents with popular models for beginners.
Bert Hedelin of Goteberg Sweden will leave Hubbard June 23 after a year as Hubbard High School exchange student. He plans to return to Sweden for high school, then university training in medicine or dentistry. Bert excelled academically and played tennis while living with the Antonio family and socializing with local golf and tennis players. He and Alex Antonio Jr. chased golf and tennis, with Bert also qualifying for a U S Open district event. He will tour Cleveland and New England then gather with 2,200 other exchange students in Washington, D C before flying home July 20 to Stockholm.
Ohio University hosts the sixteenth annual high school journalism workshop June 24 to 30 with 50 specialists directing sessions for about 1600 attendees from over 375 high schools. Diane Emch and others lead HUB and HIGHLIGHTER staffs. Bard yearbook staff members include Jim Alexander and Jane Mayon.
A list of officers for the Veterans of Foreign Wars met in Warren on June 3 with Joseph Scarpine originally named but later misrecorded. The gathering drew about 200 reps from 36 posts in Pratt Mahoning Summit and Parlage counties with Ralph Qbeon of Waerten observed as a distant commander.
The Hubbard Park and Recreation Board outlined the 1962 city park summer program. Due to budget limits there will be no preschool supervision. parents must accompany children. Hubbard Estates playground opens provisionally with a 9 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm schedule on selected days. A one week pilot will test demand while other playgrounds run 1 to 4 pm weekdays starting next Monday. A Hillcrest boys cadet baseball program for younger players starts at 4 pm Monday, limited to non Little League rosters. Girls softball begins 9 am Monday at Jones Street Playground for ages 10 to 15. boys softball at 1 pm Monday at Jones Street Field. high school boys eligible for basketball trials with Monday registration at 9 am.
