The Hubbard School District explains how inflation raises operating costs in a fifth article guiding voters for a February 24 special election on a 4.5 mill levy. It compares 1967 and 1975 price levels across key categories, noting the last tax hike occurred in 1967 and outlining financial pressures on the system.
Free public lecture by Prof. Hugh Earnhart of Youngstown State University on 1976 trends and American history. The event, part of a four program series on American Art and Literature, includes a coffee hour and is co sponsored by the library board and Friends group.
On Sunday February 15 the Widows or Widowers organization of the YWCA will gather at 6 p.m. at the YWCA located at 25 W Raven Avenue. President Eleanor Matteo says the evening offers a fun night with cards and games, a get acquainted period, cake and coffee, and a small charge. Hubbard officials report a new senior citizen transport van will start Feb. 17 with 50 volunteer drivers. Funded by a $6,000 Rotary donation and $500 insurance from Vic Buck, the van serves residents 62 and over, operates 9 am to 4 pm weekdays, and offers on call service with pickup, drop off, and home return.
Judge John D. DePietro announced 836 juveniles were housed in 1975 at the Rehabilitation and Detention Department of the Juvenile Justice Center, with 584 males and 252 females. They logged 3,836 days of confinement, an average daily population of 11 and a seven day average stay. James D. Maderitz, Juvenile Court Director, called the data asto proof of the Center’s need.
A two story frame house on W. Liberty St in Hubbard built before 1841 is identified as the citys oldest standing home by Bicentennial committee member. The 135 year old dwelling shows Emerson style architecture, walnut fireplace bricks dated 1841, original siding and high ceilings with walnut woodwork. Doctors and a dentist long resided here with a barber east of the house serving as a former office. The committee plans commemorative markers for homes at least 100 years old and continues researching more local historic properties.
Heavy snow and icy slush hinder Hubbard street crews from clearing all streets. A salt shortage worsens the problem, with Youngstown and Warren also affected. Officials urge patience as plowing gaps persist and traffic control work suffers in extreme cold. An electric eye was installed at Waugh Dr playground.
February 11 notes Arthur Lee, a Virginian in England, asked by Congress to found European embassies. February 14 records Congress naming a committee including Ben Franklin to seek Canadian support for the Colonial cause.
Hubbard's swimming pool will close for repairs from Friday February 13 to Monday February 16. Open swims and classes resume Tuesday February 17, said pool director Richard Cepin.
