A 13 year old Reed Middle School student, Timmy Rochford, battles a rare malignant brain germinoma. He has lost significant vision and is undergoing six weeks of radiation at Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh. The community is urged to donate via curbside cans or the Timmy Rochford Medical Fund at Dollar Bank to support ongoing treatment costs.

Reed Middle School in Hubbard resumes a student hall monitor program to improve security amid school violence concerns. Monitors require a 3.0 GPA and strong recommendations, attend training, and must sign in visitors, monitor hall passes, and report suspicious activity to staff. Eight entrances are supervised daily. visitors must report to the office.

Reed Middle School students showcase 11 works in the 1989 Northeastern Ohio Regional Scholastic Art Awards at Bliss Hall YSU. Gold Key honors go to Kyle Ruha for Autumn Forest and Gina Papa for Inside A Cyclone. Honorable Mentions include McNeeley Whitt Vanhorn Costick Zipay Cooper Thompson Schlass. The exhibit runs February 5 to 19 with public hours Monday to Friday 8 am to 10 pm Saturday 10 am to 4 pm Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. An awards ceremony is planned at the Butler Institute of American Art on February 5.

Valley residents join Hands Around The Valley hunger drive
Valley residents from Mahoning to Trumbull counties are mobilized to raise funds for the hungry through Hands Around The Valley organized by FOOD. Harold Davis says proceeds go to Mahoning Valley Food Bank and the Food Coalition of Trumbull County for food purchases. Participants donate at least 5 dollars each or 10 dollars per family, forming a 1000-person mile long human chain from Southern Park Mall Boardman to Market Street Youngstown to Courthouse Square Warren.
