Hubbard residents are urged to watch CBS Original Amateur Hour on Sunday August 27 as the Mar Kals of Hubbard perform. The group, sons and daughters of Al Marrokal, auditioned in Cleveland and were chosen to appear on the show.
Thirteen Hubbard residents filed for township and school offices in the November election by Monday afternoon. Filing continues until August 9. Trustees seats attract seven candidates, including incumbent Dale Butler. Chester Bonaquist had not filed. School board contenders total six, with Steven Chuey among incumbents and Dale Williams not yet filed. Terms for both boards run four years, expiring January 1, 1962. Others filing include Ke Coonce, Alexander Forte, George Macabobby, Eli Moga, Curtis Vasey Jr., William Swaim, Laverna Raseta, Alfred Deane, Philip Culcasi, William McKee, and John McConnell.
The Stitch and Chat Club will hold its bi monthly meeting on Thursday August 10 at 11 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Charles Davis on Hubbard Masury Road.
Pvt. Donald Martin of Company C 9th Infantry received a letter of commendation after he administered mouth to mouth respiration and first aid during a violent July storm at Fort Benning Georgia. The incident saved several lives after a lightning strike killed four soldiers and injured 15 others. Martin, son of Mrs. Ethel Martin and Dale Martin, acted despite being stunned, aiding the injured until help arrived. Colonel C P Hannum presented the commendation. Martin enlisted in 1961 and trained at Fort Knox before arriving at Fort Benning.
Hubbard officials discuss replacing aging police cars. Two cruisers show transmission and front-end problems with about 100,000 miles, keeping speeds under 60 mph. Council members, led by Mayor Allen, plan to evaluate buying a 1961 or 1962 model or a regular auto as cruiser.
The council schedules a Saturday meeting with Hubbard Estates Inc to discuss drainage sewer and street issues. The Board of Public Affairs funds for water lines to Hubbard Estates may be terminated until the meeting.
Bobby Budd has taken the lead with 250 points in the Hub bard News Subscription Contest as it nears completion. Bob Matthews trails with 240 points followed by Karen McIntee in third and John Marshall in fourth.
Attorney and longtime Hubbard School Board member Steven E. Chuey filed nominating petitions to run again. He is in his eighth year on the board and has served as president and finance committee chair. Chuey, a Youngstown University and Western Reserve University alum, is an attorney and accountant with tax specialization and has taught at Youngstown University. He belongs to several bar associations and community groups and attends St. Patrick's Church in Hubbard.
Wilbur Cox former Hubbard High School football coach and teacher from 1927 1937 will be honored at an open house at the home of Wilson D Patton 181 Belo Vista Dr Sunday at 7 p m All former students football players teaching associates and friends are invited to attend the gala affair.
The three Hubbard Republican clubs plan a joint picnic on August 15 at Harding Park No 1 pavilion at 6 30 p m. The Hames Club and Teen Age Republican Club join the event. The committee provides meat rolls and beverages, attendees to bring covered dishes and table service.
Principal C. E. Jones announced that all new students may register at the high school between now and September. Registration hours are daily 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:30 to 3:30. Freshman orientation is Tuesday September 5 at 3:30 with homeroom assignments, schedules, and a campus tour by Student Council. The first day of school is Wednesday September 6. Postcards will be sent to registered students.
The Teen-age Republicans club met last Monday evening in the Metropolitan Bank basement with guests including Mr. Wilson Patton and Mr. Harvey Hatch. Philip Rogers, president of Youngstown's Young Republicans, spoke on educational and party-building projects. officers were elected and appointed, including Roy Minina as president and Steve Smith as publicity officer.
Mayor Robert Allen announced to the city council that $1 227.17 was collected in June and July from fines fees forfeitures licenses and meter collections. June brought $571.92 with $488.17 to the city and July yielded $655.25 with $642.65 to the city. Police Chief Bob Greer said 30 arrests in June and 33 in July were made, and nine accidents were investigated in June while five were investigated in July.
