Springs and North Road principals report stable enrollment after Christmas. They prepare for fall Round-Up, January kindergarten registrations, and February candy sale to fund equipment. January to March skating parties at The Top and Strip Roller Rink, a Youngstown Civic Children’s Theatre program, MLK Day workshops, and alcohol drug program at North Road. The sixth grade band concert in March and spring music program in April are planned along with other district events.
Howland Local School District board votes to seek a continuation of the current five year operating levy for 2 million dollars annually. Officials say the term emergency or renewal confuses voters and may have contributed to a defeat last fall. The measure faces a March 22 ballot.
Dr. James J. LaPolla was named head of the Howland Board of Education at its reorganizational meeting succeeding John Kurtz. James E. Herriman was named vice president and Louis Herrman re-elected treasurer with a $25,000 yearly contract through January 1987. The board approved a Jan 3 special session resolution to appeal the Erie Lackawanna delinquent tax settlement distribution, seeking $244,000 in interest on back taxes. Howland will join Warren and Niles and other districts in pursuing this funds. The board also noted Howland has received $11,000 in delinquent tax dollars and could gain $5,000–$6,000 more if the appeal succeeds. The budget commission has given the interest to county government. Howland will have its legal directors prosecute the matter with Niles and Warren, due to J Walter Dragelevich's potential conflict as county prosecutor and budget commissioner. Local superintendents met in late December to press for interest funds, independently from city and township actions.
The Trumbull County Health Department will hold its annual Spring Round-Up offering free immunizations for children entering school. Dates include Jan 13 at Howland Glen, Feb 11 at Howland Springs, and March 18 at Howland Glen, with April 20 at Howland Springs. Immunization is a legal requirement, busing will be provided, and kindergarten registration runs through Jan 14 with birth certificates and immunization records.
Howland The Scroll staff calls for Parent Patrons to help pay yearbook costs. A five dollar donation earns listing on the Parent Patrons page with advisor Norman Cox guiding the Scroll.
Howland High School invites applications for the head football coach position with a deadline of January 15. Applications should be sent to Robert Fillmore, HHS principal, 8200 South St. SE, Warren, Ohio 44484, per athletic director Ted Savanga.
