Probabilities from Washington indicate a warm weekend with fair to good winds. Eastern Texas and Indian Territory may see southerly breezes on Saturday and Sunday, while Oklahoma remains fair with similar southeasterly conditions.
Anita Rublens, is struck by an object while playing with an older child. The injury causes the loss of sight in one eye. She was taken to San Antonio for medical treatment today.
Ten thousand Sunday school children gathered at the exposition sounding to cheer Admiral Dewey. They waved 1000 American flags and presented him a silver punch bowl and a wild flag.
London reports Lord Roberts's mounted infantry moving thirty two miles in two days and reaching near Brandfort as Hulton approaches. Boers retreat, Irish Brigade from Lous to Marquez suffers heavy losses while British casualties are reported. Parliament debates Splen kop dispatches amid mixed signals on war policy and Milner letters.
Brabant's division strengthens its hold in the hills around the Gadybrand fold about twenty miles from Wepener. A large Boer force, recently occupying Wepener, is now located in the Free State mountains and adjacent valleys as Brabants troops press to secure the area.
Senator James K. Jones of Arkansas arrived at the Fifth Avenue hotel with ex-Senator Hill and ex-Senator Gorman in town sparking talk of a conference to draft a united party platform. No publication payment is expected from Jones.
A British force observed 100 Boers marching past their position and could not identify them as friend or foe until they reached a hollow a few miles away where the group was revealed as a Boer commando.
Allwalworth Cape Colony May 1. Smithfield was occupied yesterday by General Hart's brigade. Of about 150 Boers in the town, twenty five were captured and the rout decamped. Ladybrand was recently full of Boer wounded, who have now been removed to Flehberg.
London reports criticize the publication of the Spionkop dispatches as government leaders defend. Lord Roberts writes to the war office dated Brandfort May 3 stating Brandfort was occupied with little opposition and few casualties.
Ladysmith May 4 The Boers have shifted their gunfire to the hills facing British lines before Pindelaag and have aimed Long Tom toward Wessel’s Nek.
The War Department reports General Otis cites progress in Luzon and Visayan islands. For April the enemy suffered heavy losses with 21 killed, wounded, and captured. 13 enemy officers and 209 rifles captured. Allied casualties include 3 officers and 24 enlisted men killed, more wounded, and a few prisoners still to be tallied.
Governor Leary orders release of Guam census data showing a population of 651 on January 1 with 249 residents in the capital Agana. The report notes a surplus in the islands' finances and that American money has not yet entered Guam, with balances in silver currency.
May 4 Washington the Naval Committee opposes the coast and geodetic survey as the sundry civil appropriation bill moves forward. Lawmakers clash over survey of waters around insular possessions amid McKinley veto of a bill on Navajo and Indian rights.
In Flatonia Texas on May 4 Huddy Tilman age 11 months fell from the rear of a buggy while on a dewberry outing with his father and younger brother. The left leg was broken near the knee and physicians were called after the injury. An amputation was performed but doctors fear the boy will die within a few hours.
War department confirms discovery of archives implicating foreign firms at Manila. Officials say dispatches do not name firms alleged to have supplied munitions of war to rebels.
In Frankfort on May 4 the Goebel assassination case featured testimony alleging pardons issued by Taylor for several individuals and a plotted attack on the Secretary of State's office. Witnesses described meetings, disguises, and a plan to bring troops to Frankfort, with Judge Deany and other officials cited in discussions about the conspiracy.

A Negro bishop with unlimited authority was created to oversee church actions and hold plenary powers, while John E F Bowen led the Tinion Theological seminary as acting president. The assembly debated amunemetite and ministerial tenure as reforms.
Washington reports war department travel orders authorize General Otis to return to the United States with May 10 as his sailing date. General MacArthur is named to succeed Otis as commander of the division of the Southern Laon. Brevet Major General Wheaton designated to proceed MacArthur as commander of the department of Southern Laon.
The British steamer Virginia captained by Charles Savelnd from Dalquiri Cuba to Baltimore ran aground on Diamond Shoal near Cape Henry Virginia on May 3 during heavy weather. Reported drownings include Samuel Park steward P.8 George Walley chief engineer Harris and Olsen firemen and two other unknown sailors.
Special to The Post reports General Charles F. Dick of Ohio seeks to push Populists toward a straight party ticket in Ohio and to buy influence at conventions. The piece notes Republican funds behind the effort and his aim to draw Populists away from Bryan in western states. Dick and George B. Cox reportedly meet to influence Cox to withdraw as a candidate.
South Bend, Ind reports William Z. Bryan met with Benjamin Shiveley. Shiveley opposes the Democratic nomination for governor and instead seeks the vice presidency.
Colonel Dick travels to Cincinnati to court George Cox’s favor amid midie-of-the-road populist tensions. He seeks leverage to topple rivals, calibrate the populist convention ticket, and influence the campaign as Republicans hope strict populist ballots dent Bryan’s presidential bid.
Cincinnati May 1 leaders at Denigon National headquarters cheer the popilist National convention set for Wellnewdig. Secretary Parker cites a telegram from Park showing Texan unity and a favorable outcome amid internal factional debate.
