The Associated Press reports only a slight chance of rain tonight in Arkansas, but precipitation probability will increase again on Wednesday. Today, rain and thundershowers will be numerous over the southeastern two thirds of the state, with scattered showers in the northwest. The overall rain outlook emphasizes rising chances later.
The Hope Star reports a broad weather outlook with scattered rain chances across Arkansas and Texas, warmer today then cooler by weekend. It lists 24 hour rainfall totals for several towns, plus overnight lows, and notes a record low maximum temperature in Little Rock for Sept 15, 1949. Western Division manager Clyde Martin of Arkansas Power and Light spoke on the U S energy problem at the Hope Lions Monday lunch. He noted U S residents share 6 percent of world population yet use 30 percent of global energy and urged realistic energy policy amid rising fuel oil costs and environmental rules.
Vickie R. Perkins and David A. Sitzes from Hope High School Jeri G. Bell of Mineral Springs High School and Kent McAnally of Arkadelphia High School are among about 15 000 semifinalists in the 1976 National Merit Scholarship program. Semifinalists represent the top half of one percent of the nation s high school seniors and progress to finalist status with school endorsements records and confirmed PSAT scores.

Nine women vie for Miss Hempstead County and nineteen enter the Little Miss contest. A talent contest accompanies the event featuring three dance routines, three twirl performances, one instrumental piece, and one vocal instrumental presentation. The pageant is Tuesday September 16 at 7 p.m. in Red River Vocational Technical School fellowship hall with no admission charge.
Southwestern Bell will issue revised Hope and Boolcan bills this September with detailed long distance data. The new format lists time and duration of calls, call type and toll classification, interstate or intrastate, applicable rate period, monthly adjustments, unpaid balances, and taxes separate from charges plus a due by date.
Revival services start tonight at the Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ 911 Bell Street and run through September 20. Evangelists Gary Deloach and George Dixon of Arkadelphia Arkansas lead the event with Elder O N Dennis pastor inviting the public. A pageant Twelve Gates To The City will be at Garrett Chapel Baptist Church Sunday September 21 at 730 p.m. Doris Brown presides over the Young Women’s Auxiliary with Neva Carmichael directing and Rev G L Hughes hosting. Dorothy M Butler and daughter Shelia return to Los Angeles after visiting Hope with Mrs Willie M Davenport.
Obituary notices report funeral services for Ross L. Crank of Emmet at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Emmet United Methodist Church with burial in Snell Cemetery. Crank, 91, died Monday in a Hope hospital, survived by a son Bennie Ray Crank, daughters Nona Browning and Eunice Coffee, sister Alice McCallahan, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Also listed are funeral services for R. V. Livily, 49, at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Nashville Latimer Funeral Chapel, burial at Avery's Chapel near McCaskill. Livily, a Dearborn, Michigan, resident and former bartender, died Friday at his home. Survivors include siblings Verlin, Buster, Florence, Faye, Annie Mae, and numerous nieces and nephews. A separate AP item notes that in air travel, private pilots constitute nearly half of the nation’s four hundred thousand licensed pilots, with women pilots about ten percent.
CIA Director William Colby told a Senate intelligence committee the agency spent nearly 3 million developing and maintaining poisons and devices to deploy them. He cited a silent dart gun and noted work began in 1952 to replace World War I cyanide capsules. Two operational uses were found, one in 1960 with Francis Powers and a second using incapacitating drugs on guard dogs in Southeast Asia.
