The Associated Press reports rain increased across Arkansas early today with more showers expected through Tuesday. A low pressure system extended from the plains to the Texas-Oklahoma panhandle and an upper disturbance over Missouri, driving the wet weather as these features moved eastward.
Hope Star reports forecast cloudy with showers and thunder across northern Arkansas and partial sun in the south, with temperatures from the 70s to low 80s. 24 hour precipitation totals listed for Fort Smith Fayetteville Harrison and city lows. Also includes subscription rates carriage by carrier and mail for Arkansas and out of state.
UT Austin student leaders say a student faculty strike will occur this week to protest the appointment of Dr Lorene Rogers as university president. SHAFT announced a noon Wednesday demonstration on the main mall followed by a campus wide walkout for students and professors through the rest of the week.
The University of Arkansas at Hope begins an in-service course for secondary math teachers on September 15 at 6 30 p.m. in Hope High School. Funded by a 158000 grant from the National Science Foundation, the program offers three semester hours credit and includes sixteen three hour meetings.
Garland Medders told Hope Rotary Club at the Sheraton Inn that utility rates for the city electricity will not improve. He cited dropped earnings in the electrical system, AP and L agreement gimmicks, and computer mistakes raising local bills. He noted air conditioning costs surpass old fans and Fuel Adjustments have prompted public questions, to be shown in mills later. President Vincent Foster led the luncheon with guests Dick Chapman, Mitch LaGrone, Dr. Bill Coffee, Ed Jackson and Dennis Ramsey.
The Millwood resident office hosts an open house from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday September 27 to mark the nation’s fourth annual hunting and fishing day. Corps personnel will explain natural resources conservation on Millwood Lake and show hunting and fishing uses. Free maps brochures and literature will be available. Duck blind permit issuance on Millwood Lake begins that day and runs through waterfowl season.
The senate will convene Monday night to endorse the strike. A general faculty meeting is set for Tuesday to discuss faculty action after Dr Rogers was appointed last Friday.
CHICAGO AP One of the nation’s leading rural magazines says equal rights for farm women are long overdue. Jim Thomson editor of Prairie Farmer notes women are on the war path and cites a widow who was denied ownership of a farm after her husband’s death. A Prairie Farmer poll finds 25 percent of Midwest farm women are taking town jobs or pursuing education. Thomson argues farm women seek equal partnership in Social Security taxation and government rules as changes in their role continue.
Washington AP reports Democrats consider a limited extension to oil price controls to trigger public pressure for ending the policy. Ford opposes. Senate Republicans and key lawmakers clash over a take-it-or-leave-it extension and potential veto, with debate over 10 to 12 cent gasoline increases versus 3 cents in White House estimates.
A gunman, after repeatedly declaring to release a hostage, stepped to the plane door with a mechanic in front. He raised his gun, then lowered it and aimed at Sgt. Van Dyke, prompting a police sharpshooter to fire, striking him in the head.
Thomas S. Kleppe SBA administrator announces J. Haskell Jones as a member of the Little Rock District Advisory Council. Jones, general manager of Radio Stations KXAR Hope Arkansas and future owner of KDQN DeQueen, serves a two year term and will attend semi annual meetings to discuss local small business needs and SBA program guidance. He is past president of the Hope Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club and an elder in the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs Kittie Parker Reese 84 of Nathan Ark died Saturday in Murfreesboro hospital. Born Sept 24 1890 in North Carolina she was a Methodist. Survivors include three sons Clyde Reese Texarkana Norman Reese Valparaiso Ind Dillard Reese Portage Ind a daughter Emogene Cotheren Gary Ind two brothers Henry Parker Nashville and John Parker Yazoo City Miss two sisters Wincie Westbrooks Nashville and Nell Elam Murfreesboro seven grandchildren 12 great grandchildren Services 2:30 Monday Biggs Chapel Church Nathan Rev Bruce Bean officiating Burial Biggs Chapel Cemetery Latimer Funeral Service. The cantaloupe takes its name from the castle of Cantaloupe in Italy where the fruit was grown in gardens surrounding the building of a 16th century pope.
