Union president M W Singletary said maintenance personnel and some production workers would be back this morning. The plant processes raw bauxite for smelting at Reynolds Jones Mill and Arkadelphia plants.

Cairo AP report says Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer killed himself with poison after learning of a forthcoming special investigation tribunal. Arkansas Welfare Commissioner Len Blaylock said the state has little hope for an average five dollar monthly increase in state welfare benefits. Proposed Social Security amendments would lift minimum benefits from forty four to fifty dollars, enabling a six dollar deduction from welfare checks for about forty two thousand recipients, with potential but unlikely state funding to cover the rise. The plan would also require AFDC job training and cap federal payments on last January’s rolls, as welfare needs grow and Medicaid readiness looms. The department spent eighty six million seven hundred fifteen thousand dollars in 1966-67, up about twenty percent from 1965-66.
