The National Weather Service reports a complex pattern over Arkansas today bringing increased cloudiness and a chance of showers. Heaviest activity expected in the southern portion. Mild days and cool nights predicted with highs in the low teens or twenties depending on location.
The Hope Star reports highs across Arkansas reaching 88 at Texarkana and Fort Smith with mid 80s elsewhere. Lows range from 60s to upper 50s as showers and thundershowers move through the region.

The Jack Hazlewood Crusade speakers spoke on drug uses and abuses at the Hope Lions weekly luncheon at Town and Country Restaurant. Hazlewood noted high crime linked to drugs and that most young users obtain them from friends. He compared drug death tolls to wars and highlighted ongoing county crusade efforts at First Baptist Church with the Eddie Smith Trio providing music.
Farmers harvest a record grain crop with corn at a forecast 5.77 billion bushels, up 4 percent from last year, while demand from foreign buyers keeps prices high. Although exports rise for wheat and soybeans, livestock producers need lower feed costs or higher live-animal prices to spur bigger meat supplies, amid tight corn reserves and ongoing price pressures into 1974.
Washington AP reports that Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns faces the House Banking Committee to question the Fed's autonomy amid the credit crunch and proposed sweeping financial reforms. Rep Patman leads scrutiny, with Republican Rep Blackburn voicing blame while economists urge aligning monetary policy with the President.
Residents object to a proposed incinerator on a main artery near town and beside a sewer pond. They warn trash fallout will affect all, suggesting sites and fee changes while the board considers options and requests more time. Directors were absent and the meeting adjourned after other business.
