A shell described as a 155mm howitzer shell was found Monday afternoon by Arkansas Highway Department grass cutting crew in a ditch north of Hope. The Red River Arsenal detachment in Texarkana disarmed it and took it to the arsenal. Grass beneath the shell was not dead, indicating it had not lain long. A similar shell was found about three months earlier in Hempstead County.
Odessa Ballard, 38, of Hot Springs Ark, was held on a homicide charge after a fatal stabbing at a boardwalk hotel party. Ballard allegedly stabbed Stanford McDonald, 37, with a penknife. Authorities said the incident occurred at the aunt’s party residence.
Detroit AP reports rising labor costs and new health and safety requirements push auto prices higher as Ford, Chrysler, GM and others prepare new model price increases. Ford and UAW plan renewed bargaining Friday to end a six day strike amid varied price changes across 115 models.

The Assembly of God announces a Pre school Day Care Center to open September 18. The church will re arrange and furnish rooms to care for up to thirty children from 7 am to 5 pm daily except Saturday and Sunday. Care will be provided by mothers or ladies selected as workers and the center aims to meet welfare standards of Arkansas.
