Milwaukee civil rights clash as South Side whites clash with police

In Milwaukee on a Sunday night, hundreds of South Side whites attacked police with bricks and bottles after a 14th day of open housing protests by African Americans. Tear gas drove rioters from the streets as 2,500 marchers, moving to the North Side, returned to headquarters. Nineteen arrests and three injuries were reported as officers used gas to disperse the crowd near a viaduct and business street. The crowd chanted Groppi as police fought to restore order.

12 Arrested in Pulaski Gaming Raids

State Police arrested 12 in Pulaski County after raiding 10 gambling locations and one club. The Westwood Club was seized with about $20,000 of equipment. owner K Bagney Levine among those arrested. Five rural Pulaski and five North Little Rock venues raided. $8,300 cash seized at one residence along with racing forms telephones betting slips duplicating equipment and dice.

Two Hempstead County Districts Win Title I Funds

Two Hempstead County school districts received final approval for Title I funds totaling 168,805 for 1967 68. Associate Commissioner W H Moore of the State Department of Education announced allocations for Hope and Patmos districts based on economically disadvantaged students. Arkansas statewide Title I totals reach 20,201,473 with Hempstead County also receiving 5,275 under Title II for library materials.

Thieu Says Heavy Fighting Should Be Left to U S Forces

In a Meet the Press interview South Vietnam President-elect Nguyen Van Thieu said U S troops should bear most of the heavy fighting in Vietnam while South Vietnamese forces handle pacification. He also signaled openness to peace talks with Hanoi and a pause in bombing.

U S Navy planes struck Cam Pha on Sunday in a deep raid as Marines held Con Thien against 3 000 enemy troops. North Vietnamese losses numbered at least 141 killed with 34 Marines dead and 185 wounded. South Vietnamese forces also fought in the north.
