The Arkansas forecast calls for more showers and thunderstorms today with widespread high moisture. Most rainfall on Wednesday stayed under half an inch, isolated spots reported just over an inch, and temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s across the state.
The Hope Star reports an unsettled forecast with partial precipitation continuing through tonight, followed by a cooler drier air mass moving in later tonight. Tonight’s lows upper 50s to low 60s, Friday highs in the 70s. statewide highs around 92 and lows near 65 at some stations. Also included are circulation notes, AP and press associations membership, and subscription and mail rates with regional pricing for Hope and surrounding counties.
City officials weigh options to raise revenue for eight departments by tax measures such as franchise tax and five mill property tax, warning of higher bills for utilities. A truck route plan, approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission, prompts discussions on street restrictions within city limits.
Wayne Banks as player coach and sponsor for Banks Gulf earned runner-up in the 2nd season and third place overall. Larry Walker, Dairy Diner player coach, finished runner-up in the 1st season. Carrol Beck, Production Credit Association player coach, took second place in the tournament.
Dallas School District submits a $5 million desegregation plan calling for 18 000 of 142 034 students to be bused. The NAACP counters with its own unitary plan while a 5 4 vote approved the board proposal to close six schools and create magnet programs needing rapid implementation.
Bill Wade of Eli Lilly spoke at the Hope Lions luncheon at the Sheraton Inn detailing the high costs and lengthy process behind new drugs. He cited 1974 research spending of 93 million dollars and a decade total of 588 million dollars. A film showed drug testing from animals to humans, focusing on leukemia treatment akin to insulin for diabetes, with a young patient showing improvement. Guests and new members were recognized, and program chair Ed Darling introduced Wade.
Washington AP Senators John L. McClellan and Dale Bumpers of Arkansas voted with the majority to override President Ford, enacting a $7.9 billion education appropriations bill into law by an 88 to 12 margin. In a separate vote, they supported the failed bid to override Ford on a six month extension of oil price controls, 61 to 9.
Hope Public Schools have received a 91,336 grant from the Department of Health Education and Welfare for a secondary school reading program in the 1975 76 school year. The program funds aim to reduce minority isolation and assist students with diagnosed reading problems. A reading specialist and ten aides are hired to support teachers and tutors. student and district advisory committees have been formed with named members including Jim Stuart Augusta Williamson and Mack White.
George C. Duke of Houston, a former Hope resident, is invited to a private Dallas reception for President Gerald Ford following the National Federation of Republican Women meeting. Duke, a stock investor, real estate developer and Kwik Stop Markets owner, will be with his wife Faye at 4500 Preston Road.
J. W. Rowe, director of Red River Vocational Technical School, announced organized night classes with vacancies. Secretarial Refresher, Welding, Bookkeeping and Accounting, and Drafting meet on Mondays or Tuesdays 7 to 10 p.m. Two more courses Refrigeration and Industrial Electricity start October 14, 1975, meeting Tuesdays 7 to 10 p.m. Registration options provided with hours and a contact number 777-5722.
Obituary notices report John H. Meeks of Arkadelphia a former Clark County welfare director and Henderson State College alum who played for the Henderson Reddies in 1929 1930, plus Billie Beasley of Fort Smith and Henry Sommer of Centerville Ohio. The item also notes Rome Italy firemen as a national safety force with a three year term exempt from military service.
