Booby traps blamed for many Vietnam war deaths

Washington officials say as many as half of the 43,000 American deaths in Vietnam may have been caused by booby traps and mines. Pentagon figures show 6,500 booby trap related deaths but records are imprecise. The issue involves Marines and Army casualties plus Vietnamese tolls, with lawmakers citing potential higher totals and new countermeasures like mine sniffing dogs.

Pentagon official cites South Vietnamese as mine setters

The speaker argues Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops did not kill soldiers but South Vietnamese peasants who planted mines and booby traps.
