Labor Day Traffic Toll Falls Short of Estimate

The 73 hour holiday period saw 390 traffic deaths in motor vehicle accidents, with 22 boating, 58 drownings, and 69 from other causes. The National Safety Council expected the total to miss the preholiday estimate of 420 and likely be below 400, a figure not seen since 364 in 1954.

North Little Rock band commissions Williams for spring concert

The North Little Rock high school band will perform a newly commissioned three movement piece by Clifton Williams. Williams will direct the work and donate 5 percent of his royalties to the band, which will use funds to pay a $500 fee and to commission another score. Board to Decide on Tech School in Faubus Call

Arkansas state Board of Education will meet August 1 to decide if requesting governor Faubus to include 275000 dollars for a vocational technical school in a second special session call. Education Commissioner Arch Ford said the matter would be put to the board, after a House approved the bill but the Senate fell two votes short. Ford noted no comment on a possible 2 million teacher salary bonus, unnecessary as surplus land funds were largely exhausted.

Kimes Escapes Missouri Jail

Lea Roy Kimes, a 50 year old convict from Chester Arkansas, escaped McDonald County jail in Pineville Missouri by picking a lock with a wire coat hanger. He faced Missouri charges for pot office burglary car theft and bringing a stolen car into Missouri while already serving an eight year Arkansas sentence and linked to post office break-ins in Jane and Powell. Arkansas and Texas prisons and federal terms at Leavenworth and Alcatraz are noted in his prior history. A search with about 35 Arkansas officers expanded into the Southwestern Missouri Ozarks after the escape.
