The Associated Press reports another hot day in Arkansas with highs in the mid and upper 90s and temperatures in the upper 90s in central and eastern areas. A cold front extending from Iowa to the Oklahoma Panhandle is expected to move slowly across the region, bringing relief.
Hope Star reports a front moving toward Arkansas bringing moisture and a chance of thundershowers Thursday with 30 percent central and north, 20 percent elsewhere. Highs for Thursday in the low to mid 90s. extended outlook shows widely scattered afternoon storms Friday to Sunday, highs upper 80s to low 90s, lows upper 60s to near 70. tonight's lows near 70 with city readings: Little Rock 72, Pine Bluff 75, El Dorado 73, Texarkana 71, Fort Smith 71, Fayetteville 64, Harrison 68, Jonesboro 75, Memphis 79. In Dermott Arkansas Charles Williams ten year old rider died when the pickup he rode in lost control and overturned investigators said he tried to jump from the vehicle. Driver James Haven of Dermott was injured in the crash. Vis itors to St Maarten can call the United States by direct dial now but still must use overseas operator for calls.
The Yerger High School reunion in Hope drew about 600 attendees including former students teachers and community members from across the United States. Dr Tillman Cothran spoke lauding Yerger’s impact and remembering teachers while Harold Conway organized the event thanking local schools for facilities and support.
James Luck, Hempstead County Emergency Services coordinator, spoke to the Kiwanis Club at Town and Country Restaurant. Roy Taylor introduced him as he described state and local emergency planning, warning systems, and the need for coordinated response across fire, police, sanitation, and bridge crews.
James Luck outlines a plan to unify emergency response with a single county telephone number. Washington Perrytown and Patmos have volunteer fire departments. Fulton and McNabb lack coverage. The meeting included Lavon Flaherty R L Carpenter Jim Stuart and Jay Rowe as guests.
The first major strike of the new school year begins as Chicago teachers man picket lines at 600 public schools forcing cancellation of the first day of classes. Supt. Hannon orders shut for about 530000 students after a 21439 to 2537 vote in favor of striking.
First United Methodist Church of Hope announces a three day Venture in Discipleship September 19 to 21 led by coordinators Fred and Mary Ann Clinard of Nashville. About 30 laymen from Tennessee Kentucky and Arkansas direct events including a congregational dinner general meeting small group meetings coffee groups and luncheons. Youth activities will be led by Henry Hill Mrs Joe P Watkins and Gerald Keith with a separate youth format.
Washington stripper Fanne Foxe now says in an autobiography she became pregnant by Rep. Wilbur Mills and had an abortion late in 1973. Newsweek reports Mills was allegedly overjoyed but Foxe conducted a self-made wedding ceremony while both were married. The Masons may recall Mills over misconduct charges.
In Cleveland Mississippi police pursue James Hampton 49 after a shooting at a local apartment complex left Billie Faye Ramsey 31 and Arthur Neely Burnwatt Jr. 35 dead. Ramsey’s daughter Rita Faye 13 was treated for neck wound. The incident followed an argument with Hampton who was dating Ramsey.
Malcolm McKinnon, 68, died Tuesday morning in a Little Rock hospital. A retired State hospital employee in Benton, he belonged to the Assembly of God church. Survived by wife Grace. sons Coy and Dudley McKinnon. sisters Maggie Stone and Lois Pittman. Funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday at Assembly of God Church, Rev. Charles Sharpe officiating. Burial in Sweet Home cemetery, Cornish Mortuary in charge.
