Station KXAR joins fourteen outlets in southern Arkansas for the continuation of its first Radio Ramble. The event runs from Saturday morning September 8 to Sunday with a full weekend of on-air programming.
The Hope Star outlines the Arkansas Mar of Dimes Radio Ramble weekend with KXAR Hope coordinating a two hour relay Saturday at 8 p.m. and multiple stations across the state sharing health messages and VIP participants including Gov. Dale Bumpers and Mary Myron Winick. KVMA Magnolia joins with an independent broadcast on Sunday September 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. with William Bigley as emcee.
Royce Pendergrass president of the Third District Livestock Association spoke to the Hope Optimist Club noting the association owns the building and leases Fair Park land for the livestock show week. He cited about 40000 dollars spent last year and over 20000 planned this year for construction and maintenance and said the show brings roughly 10000 dollars into the community. Some rodeo stock is shared with the Rodeo World Series and a small user fee is charged for building use.
At a Vermont festival in Holland, gate crashers and gunfire disrupted the event ending early after promoters ran out of money. Fires in latrines and a barn followed as about 2,000 remained from a peak of 36,000. Nine injured earlier, four shotgun wounds, two hospitalized in good condition. Security guards from a motorcycle group fired back after shots were fired at them.
Washington AP reports a record grain crop for the Soviet Union is forecast at about 195 million tons gross, below Moscow's 197.4 million goal. Despite severe weather and incomplete threshing in places, the Foreign Agricultural Service says conditions have not yet caused serious harvesting losses or grain quality issues.
Atlanta AP reports psychologists John McDavid and Herbert Harari say unpopular names like Elmer Hubert and Oswald correlate with lower peer status and teacher bias. Teachers associate dull or dumb traits with certain names and prefer popular ones like Susan Elizabeth David Michael and Stephen reflecting in classroom dynamics.
Crusader Jack Hazlewood will launch a city-wide revival at First Baptist Church Hope starting September 9 through September 16. Rev. Gerald W. Trussell says Hazlewood, a dynamic evangelist, has spoken to over 750,000 youths in 100 crusades and appears with the Eddie Smith Trio. Night meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited.
Alma Hightower a former Hope resident will wed O B Dobbs on September 15 at 2 p m in her Santa Cruz California home 403 Fair Avenue. The piece also recounts PENIGAR REUNION and CHAMBERS VISIT activities with numerous named families and individuals from multiple states including Texas California and Arkansas. Compulsory education for drunk drivers in San Francisco opens a four night program for probationers aiming to produce sober safer drivers.
The midwest and plains faced heavy rains and thunderstorms stretching from the Texas Panhandle to North Dakota and from East Texas to Michigan. Flood watches and tornado reports appeared with hail and 75 mph winds in Nebraska, while heat lingered on the eastern states and tropical storm Delia threatened the central Gulf Coast.
Miami AP says National Hurricane Center staff split in two to monitor two developing storms. Delia moves northwest toward central Gulf states with 45 to 50 mph winds. Christine, regaining strength, heads west-northwest toward the Leeward Islands with 60 mph winds. Christine expected to pass between Guadaloupe and Antigua early today.
Funeral services for Ballard Morehead 83 are set for 3 p.m. Monday at Buckner Methodist Church with burial in Buckner Cemetery. He died Saturday in a Little Rock hospital. WWI veteran, Purple Heart recipient, long time American Legion member. Survivors include wife Aileen, two sons, three brothers, a sister and eight grandchildren. Funeral details for Mrs. Fannie Anderson 58 include a 2 p.m. Tuesday service at Texarkana Funeral Home Chapel and burial at Chapelwood Cemetery. she died Friday in a Texarkana hospital. survivor includes stepson Leslie Tucker.
Five persons have died on Arkansas highways so far during the Labor Day weekend, continuing through today. Victims include Vickie Elaine Craig of Monticello, killed when her car left Arkansas 114 near Palmyra and overturned four times. Theotus Nelson Jr., 22, of Memphis died in a five car crash near West Memphis after veering across the median on I 55. John Albert Matlock, 19, of Fort Smith, killed when his motorcycle was struck in Fort Smith. Ricky Jackson, 14, of El Dorado, killed when his car was hit on Arkansas 15 near El Dorado. George Edmonds, 48, of East Tulsa, Okla., killed when his truck rear ended a tractor trailer and burned on I 40 near Hazen.
