First Catholic Church in Hope Grows Since 1906

The Hope Catholic community began with the 1906 acquisition of a former Episcopal building named St. Augustine. Rev. Matthew Settle and later Rev. Patrick Higgins oversaw the 1911 purchase of land on East Third Street and the 1912 dedication of Our Lady of Good Hope. The rectory followed in 1914, and a parochial school opened in 1910 with Sisters of St. Rose. By 1918 finances closed the school and hospital, the property sold to the city, and Hope’s Catholic mission expanded over eleven counties by 1993 with future open house planned.
