Fire Department budget and Rotary meeting notes in Hope Arkansas

The Hope Rotary Club heard Fire Chief Jim Cobb detail a $46 925 annual budget for the city fire department, spread over 25 categories. The department operates with eight regular and 12 volunteer firemen, five pieces of equipment including a 1940 truck due for replacement, and stresses drills and cleanliness for better insurance rates and preparedness. A guest, Bob Moers, attended the meeting led by President Clyde Fouse. Meanwhile Fort Smith and Oklahoma City authorities pursued Dennis McCaslain, an escaped convict from Cummins Prison Farm, after an armed escape with several accomplices. McCaslain, serving 21 years for assault with intent to kill, fled after driving away with two Pine Bluff men and a prison trawler, eluding officers for hours. Investigators reported associates arrested, a drowned accomplice near the Arkansas River, and McCaslain later encountered residents on Main Street before fleeing toward Fort Smith.
