The Associated Press reports a high pressure system brings clear skies to Arkansas with mild temperatures. The surface high drifts east. southerly winds return today, boosting highs above 70 in all areas and possibly into the upper 70s as moisture remains low.
Weather notes from Hope Arkansas describe moist Gulf air bringing increased clouds and a midweek frontal system with possible showers but little temperature change. Rep. Bill Alexander and Gov. David Pryor spoke at the dedication of a 205000 dollar water system in Strawberry Lawrence County. Alexander criticized the Nixon and Ford administrations for neglecting rural water and sewer mandates and urged a convention resolution to align White House and Congress. Pryor and Alexander called for rural revitalization to curb youth outmigration and create jobs, citing Pryor’s European trip as a potential influence on unemployment and population trends.
Mrs. Myrtle Madlock 55 of Hope died Friday in a Little Rock hospital. Survived by son Kenneth Ray Madlock, two grandchildren, mother Florence Sinyard, four brothers and four sisters. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Herndon Funeral Home Chapel, burial Macedonia Cemetery. Pred G. Aaron 79 of Rt 1 Hope died Saturday in local hospital. Survived by five sons, two daughters, sister Mary Jane Travis, four brothers, 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren. Funeral 3 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Union Baptist Church, burial Anderson Union Cemetery.
Arkansas Supreme Court rules City Council must set a reasonably prompt election on abolishing the Civil Service Commission, overturning a 21 month delay allowance. The decision notes Amendment 7 to the state Constitution provides a remedy for dissatisfied citizens within a proper time frame. The ruling also reverses two unrelated criminal verdicts and mentions obituary notices for Edna Williams along with brief historical notes on peanut origins in Africa.

The aide to President Marcos was killed after serving in many roles. He had been sent to the United States last February to meet Privilio Mijares, a journalist close to Marcos who later denounced the regime in San Francisco. Mijares said De Vega offered a bribe to appear before a U.S. subcommittee. Marcos denied the charge but said De Vega had provided Mijares money to spy on anti Marcos Filipinos in the United States.
