The National Weather Service notes a weak cold front moving into Arkansas tonight will not cause precipitation. The front should generate strong southerly winds on its east side as the state remains under clear skies.
Hope Star reports eight days of dry weather with mild temperatures across Arkansas. Highs reached up to 84 degrees at Little Rock and El Dorado, with other highs in the 76 to 83 range and lows from 52 to 65 across several cities. Forecast calls for fair to partly cloudy conditions through Friday with highs upper 70s to mid 90s and lows mid 40s to upper 50s.

Mrs. W A Williams Hope High School faculty advisor was reelected western advisor for the Southern Association of Student Councils at the 39th annual conference in Lake Junaluska Asheville North Carolina October 17 19. She leads liaison for seven western states and won a two year term. Hope High delegates at the conference were Tim Gunter Tony Yocom Jill Herring Carol Frazier Harold Collins and Georgia Bell.
Former Arkansas congressman David H. Pryor told the Little Rock Lions Club that President Nixon would resign within three months and that his successor could be a Democrat. Pryor named House Speaker Carl Albert or a successor to Albert, and suggested Mills could be involved in a kinship of succession. He noted Nixon’s Tuesday decision to release Watergate tapes had softened impeachment momentum.
Louis M. Gregory of Shreveport spoke to the Kiwanis Club on factors behind individual success. He cited a 10 percent figure for people who develop innate abilities and described a triangle of knowledge, skill, and attitude. The club voted to sponsor a Dale Carnegie course in Hope if interest grows. Guests included Buddy Jordan and Key Clubbers Gary Rhodes and Jack Still. Lynn Bauman was introduced as the newest Kiwanian. Birthday honorees were George Frazier and Andy High. anniversary honoree Gaylon Decious.

Denton Jr. to head the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk Va reporting in January after a rise from captain to rear admiral following his release as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. James J. Rowley retires as Secret Service director after 35 years serving six presidents, saying he wants to devote time to family. he began in 1938 and joined Roosevelt on WWII trips. In London, Archbishop of Canterbury grants royal license for Princess Anne to wed Capt. Mark Phillips in Westminster Abbey on November 14 with Queen Elizabeth II's consent.
Mrs Lee Dee Flowers 62 lifelong Hempstead County resident dies in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Survived by son Charles Flowers Texarkana daughter Mrs Joe Bobo Magnolia five grandchildren and nine siblings. Services 2 p.m. Friday Bethany Baptist Church with Rev Gordon Renshaw and others officiating. Burial Anderson Cemetery Herndon Funeral Home in charge.
Canadian International Paper Co, a major newsprint maker, announced a sharp price rise for U.S. newspapers starting Nov 1, boosting newsprint by 14 percent and adding $25 per ton to reach $200. Several Canadian rivals have already raised prices, with other cuts planned for next year. Newspaper publishers expect higher costs to drive ads rate increases as a countermeasure. U.S. newsprint averaged about $165 per ton earlier this year, with previous hikes bringing it to $175 per ton in summer.
Blytheville Air Force Base in Arkansas was put on a 24 hour alert with 3200 personnel summoned to their duty sections. The base stated the alert is routine with no disclosed reason while U S officials flagged a general military readiness in response to a Moscow warning about possible Soviet troop moves in the Middle East.
Texas military bases including Ft Hood and Ellington AFB were placed on alert with about 1,000 147th Fighter Interceptor Group personnel ordered to Ellington. The provost marshal at Ft Hood issued orders for all Texas bases to report immediately. No reason given. Calls to Ft Hood were Jammed. In Arkansas Mutual of Omaha ad charges dismissed after company adjusted ads prior to hearing.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz opens a campaign against the peanut subsidy, seeking to rewrite laws and move to target price plans for 1974 crops. He warned the battle will be rough as he argues for lower government guarantees to peanut farmers and tighter price supports. Georgia and Texas are highlighted as major producers with key lawmakers backing the new approach.
