Veterans Day Observances Highlighted by Parades and Protests
Traditional speeches and wreath layings mark Veterans Day but protests arise as some veterans boycott the Oct 25 observances. Congress moved the holiday to the fourth Monday in October for three day weekends. Arlington ceremony restrictions limit burials to certain groups. Events also in Austin and Camp Mabry include a noon memorial, Army band concert, and open houses. In New York City a 4000-strong parade is planned by American Legion and VFW. Vietnam Veterans against the War leader Jim Davis urges antiwar veterans to join with combat gear and mock guerrilla demonstrations in 50 cities nationwide.
