The National Weather Service forecasts no rain through midweek for Arkansas with fair skies and mild temperatures today and tonight. Partly cloudy skies are expected Tuesday with warmer temperatures and increasing cloudiness in the extended outlook.
Western Arkansas forecast calls for rain chances midweek with highs in the 60s and 70s and overnight lows in the 40s. Little Rock 41 and other cities logged 30s to 50s. Advertising and subscription rates listed for Hope and surrounding counties, including carrier, mail, and college offers.
Fighting continues after school integration protests as four Boston high school students and a school official plan a trip to Charlotte where busing has been used for five years to enforce court-ordered integration. Harvard Law School faculty issue a letter to Ford urging reconsideration, while about 450 National Guardsmen replace a standby force in the Boston area. Ford says the Guard presence apparently eased the situation.
The Southwest District Meeting of the Baptist Woman's Missionary Union will convene October 29 30 at First Baptist Church of Hope. Speakers include Mrs John D Floyd missionary in Manila Philippines and local WMU director Mrs Barry Wilson with sessions daily plus leadership conferences and a retirement tribute to Miss Nancy Cooper.
TV veterans Ken Berry and Sally Field will host the nationally televised Miss Teen Age America Pageant on November 30 in Little Rock. Berry, known for Mayberry R.F.D., and Field, star of The Flying Nun and other series, headline the broadcast sponsored by the Little Rock Fallfest Association.
BeBee CME Church youth development coordinators urge parents to enroll children in a drug education program. The letter warns that 80 percent of children may become drug addicts within five years if action isn’t taken and outlines four program components: education, family relation support, cultural emphasis, and recreational activities. Registration is at the main sanctuary with Mrs. P. Gant’s choir on Monday evenings.
The Four States Horse Show Association holds its annual roundup on Oct 26 at Western Sports Inc door arena in DeKalb Texas. Events include halter cutting roping pleasure reining barrels poles keyhole straightaway barrels and a jackpot team roping at about 7 pm. Prizes awarded through sixth place to fund year end awards. Navy Yeoman Second Class Mark D Rhodes reported for duty at Commander Training Command Headquarters U S Pacific Fleet San Diego. Rhodes, a 1969 Nashville High School graduate, joined the Navy in December 1970.
Obituary notices for Mrs June Olea of Blevins and Mrs Rosa Bowden Crank, both died after illnesses. Services held or announced in Hope area with survivors listed. Additional notices include Mrs Betty G Johnson of Magnolia and John Edward Lee killed Friday night in a car crash near Hope. Funeral details given by Herndon Funeral Home.
Health secretary Caspar Weinberger said the Arkansas welfare program’s error rate in awarding aid has fallen to 0.3 percent after tighter eligibility checks. About 2.5 percent of participants were found ineligible and payment amounts also showed errors.
