NBC News veteran Chet Huntley plans to leave next year after 13 years paired with David Brinkley. The Times cites a February to June window, with NBC aiming for after the 1970 midyear elections. Huntley’s departure hinges on finalizing a $15 million Montana resort project. Brinkley says he would stay if asked. The duo began in October 1956, ending their famous Good night line as NBC’s top news team. Their program reportedly nets about $30 million yearly in advertising.
Arkansas AFL-CIO President J Bill Becker called for a thorough investigation of automobile rate making after State Farm Mutual Insurance Co won a 15.3 percent increase approved by Insurance Commissioner Alan Horne. Becker labeled the hike exorbitant and questioned the rate making procedures in Arkansas after actuarial study.
A California firm submitted the apparent low bid of 5,998,590 for the powerhouse and switchyard at Stark Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River. The bid was from Wismer and Becker Contracting Engineers. Government estimate was over 6.3 million. Four bids were received.
Four American soldiers were ambushed and killed by North Korean forces near the DMZ while returning from equipment maintenance. The attack involved hand grenades and small arms fire as a 14 ton truck was targeted. Names withheld pending relatives’ notices. Since January one American has died and six wounded in DMZ incidents. this marked a new spike after a lull sparked by a political referendum.
A 95,500 suit was filed in Pulaski County Circuit Court against Milton 8B Robinson 28 Joyce L Chapman 30 both of Little Rock and S W Tracy 37 of Benton. State Revenue Commissioner Bob Scott says untaxed cigarettes were found with tax stamps missing totaling 3820 packages. The suit cites Act 416 of 1942 seeking damages of 0.5 per package for untaxed cigarettes.

Details show most combat units to go, leaving only the mobile 1st Air Cavalry Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade totaling 17000–18000 soldiers while 150000–200000 remain by year end.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird said thousands of U.S. troops could stay in Vietnam to advise and train South Vietnamese forces after the war. He spoke of a residual force slightly larger than the 6,000 to 7,000 under Kennedy, with past advisory levels rising to about 16,000 by 1963.
Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller will continue regional tours to gauge support for his tax program. He will visit Forrest City and Helena on November 20 and 21, with prior stops in Harrison October 23 and Fort Smith October 30. He plans meetings in Arkadelphia and Hope on November 5, and in Arkana and Hope will host discussions with county residents from Cayton Boone Baxter Marion Newton and Searcy.
