Cole Porter renowned lyricist and composer died at 71 in Santa Monica after kidney surgery begun October 13. He had admitted Sept 22 for routine checks, infection from a kidney stone flared, doctors said he stopped breathing. Porter wrote Night and Day and Kiss Me Kate, created music and lyrics for High Society, and counted Hollywood Night and Day as his biopic. He was famed in cafe society circles and left a vast musical legacy from a life that included Yale Harvard study and French Foreign Legion service.
