Light rain persisted in South Arkansas this morning before the National Weather Service forecast that rain would end tonight. The Wednesday outlook called for partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures with overnight lows in the region.
Rainfall totals and temperatures across Arkansas are summarized with highs in the 70s possible through Wednesday. Pine Bluff, Texarkana, El Dorado, Hot Springs and Little Rock report precipitation, while overnight lows range from the 40s to the 60s, followed by partly cloudy skies and mild 70s. State forecasts call for rain ending in southern portions today, then decreasing clouds and mild conditions with cooler nights.

Rain and heavy dew delayed harvest in Arkansas while the USDA statistical service reports cotton in good condition with about 14 percent picked. It forecasts roughly one million bales weighing 480 pounds, about 445,000 fewer than last year, and rice harvest active at about 65 percent, with 85 percent cut by this time, plus an 18 percent drop in production.
Rural carrier Herbert Elam of Fulton retires this month after 21 years and nine months, including prior military service. He started as a substitute in Hope in 1959, became regular on route four in May 1959, moved to Fulton in 1971, and served under several postmasters. A retirement dinner in Texarkana honored him. Postmaster Martha Blackwood presented a service award and a U.S. Savings bond. An avid sportsman, he plans to fish, read, raise vegetables, and eat watermelon, and hopes to learn armadillo cleaning and cooking.
Air Force says seven crewmen died when a C130 on a training flight from Little Rock Air Force Base crashed into Sugar Loaf Mountain, 20 miles south of Fort Smith. Witnesses reported a fire prior to impact, and an investigation into the crash was to begin. Names of the dead were withheld pending relatives’ notification.
Isaac James Sprague 69 died early Tuesday in a Texarkana hospital. An insurance broker and Assembly of God member, he is survived by his wife Beulah Lumpkin Sprague two sons Cecil F.A. He denied extortion charges, pleaded no contest to tax evasion, and said his resignation was to protect national trust amid Watergate and Middle East tensions.

The DOJ notes corroborating records, while four key witnesses face varying deals and immunity terms. A separate Phnom Penh theater grenade kills seven and injures 25.
Reports of multi colored sky objects over Huntington and surrounding counties draw investigation by Huntington County sheriff and town officials. Witness Richard Pape recalls red and blue lights hovering about 500 feet above his farm while his family watched. Officials say they saw no craft, but locals remain convinced something unusual occurred. Further sightings are reported by deputies near Martinsville and Andrews.
