Advisories issued for SW Arkansas travel

Dense fog covered much of Arkansas this morning reducing visibility to near zero. Traveler advisories were issued for the southwest half of the state including the Little Rock area. Fog began around midnight and halted traffic at Adams Field in Little Rock. Skies were forecast fair to partly cloudy through Tuesday with no rain expected.

Court's first woman justice sworn in Arkansas

Elsijane Trimble Roy 59 of Fort Smith is sworn as the states first woman on the Supreme Court by Chief Justice Carleton Harris. Roy, senior law clerk to federal Judge Paul Williams, was appointed by Gov. Pryor and will serve until next year. She previously became Arkansas first woman circuit court judge in 1966 and urged women lawyers to run for the high court.

Wallace favored in Arkansas Democratic poll at fair

Wallace led Arkansas Democratic primary straw poll conducted by the Greater Little Rock Jaycees at the Arkansas Fair and Livestock Show with 1,674 votes. Sargent Shriver was second with 363 votes, while Ford received 104 and Reagan 732 in the nonbinding results.

Ernest Delaney aged 67 of Columbus Arkansas died Sunday night in a local hospital. He was a retired rancher and barber and a Columbus Methodist Church member. Survived by wife Edna, son R C Delaney, sisters Beatrice Caldwell and Edna Bristow. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Herndon Funeral Home chapel. burial in Columbus Cemetery. Carl Henry Freel aged 70, of Nashville Arkansas died Saturday in a Nashville hospital. Born April 2 1905 in Decatur Indiana, he was a retired retail merchant and Baptist. Survived by wife Sue Ward Freel, son Carl H Freel Jr., step-children W L Guinn and Mrs Jack Brent, siblings Garl H Freel and Mrs Jessie Freel Moorman, two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Services at 2 p.m. Monday at Latimer Funeral Chapel. burial in Nashville Cemetery.

Future of petroleum topic addressed at Hope Rotary

Jim Wooten of the Arkansas Petroleum Council spoke at the Hope Rotary Club luncheon in the Sheraton Inn on Where Do We Go From Here with Petroleum. He warned of serious difficulty and urged deregulating natural gas as the least inflationary solution while noting proposed legislation diverting gas to the northeast harms some areas and benefits others. He argued for energy independence and cited 25 billion paid to Arab countries last year for oil amidst questions of government control.

Arsonists Burn Gretna Middle School to Shell

In New Orleans area seven fires were started at Gretna Middle School a three story structure. The blaze lasted three hours with 130 firefighters fighting it. Walls and ceilings collapsed. Classes are postponed indefinitely. The school board planned a meeting today. The building may cost at least 3 million to replace. Fire was spotted by Gretna police officer John Fourcade.
