Memphis Readies Bid Call on 90 Million Power Turbines

Memphis plans to accept bids October 20 for turbines for a 90 million dollar city power plant. Plans aim to complete construction before the Tennessee Valley Authority contract expires in June 1958. T. H. Allen, president of the City Utilities Division, said bids cover three turbine sizes and 16 operating condition combinations. The plant responds to administration objections to private power ties and the Dixon-Yates contract, which President Eisenhower ordered cancelled. The story notes U.S. steel industry stockholders exceed employees by large margin.
