Nixon warns to bolster Sixth Fleet power if pace of war shifts
President Nixon cautioned that the United States must strengthen the Sixth Fleet if its position in the area is challenged by other powers. He did not name the Soviet Union but indicated it as the target. He met with David Bruce to discuss Vietnam talks in Paris and possible progress toward ending U.S. involvement. Nixon cancelled a planned Waterville helicopter trip and Mrs. Nixon toured Ireland with protests outside the U.S. Embassy. In Bolivia, Ovando's government faced mobilization and calls for resignation amid a looming junta and elections planned for 1972.
