Bolivian President Alfredo Ovando Candia appeared to weather a coup attempt as army chief of staff Rogelio Miranda led rebels to seize the palace. Ovando, back in La Paz from Santa Cruz, vowed to rule the nation's destiny while his loyal guards manned palace balconies with orders to shoot if needed. Three ministers met with Miranda as rebels warned Ovando to resign, but talks suggested surrender was near.

Nurses to Take Coronary Care Course at Hempstead Memorial

Hempstead Memorial Hospital sponsors a Coronary Care course starting Monday October 5 with 24 staff nurses registered. The 32 hour program covers study, practical experience, and heart patient nursing care led by physicians, Mrs. Rice, and Mrs. Rogers. The new Coronary Care Unit will open by year end as a two bed unit with constant patient monitoring and modern electronic equipment. Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Rogers recently completed a 160 hour Coronary Care course in Little Rock in September. Jimmy Jones, Dale Franks, and Horace Fuller donated time and equipment in preparation for the course.

Hempstead Liquor Case Reversed by Arkansas Supreme Court

The Arkansas Supreme Court unanimously reversed a Hempstead County circuit court order that ordered confiscation and sale of about $40,000 in liquor seized near Hope for lack of a transport permit.
