The National Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy and warmer conditions tonight, followed by Saturday’s mostly cloudy, mild weather with widely scattered showers. An extended outlook calls for more showers and a few thunderstorms to spread across the slate.
The Hope Star weather report notes a front easing by Monday with cooler temperatures expected Tuesday. A high pressure system sits over West Virginia, and a Colorado Rockies low pressure area may be the next Arkansas weather maker. In New Orleans the Olympic Brass band led a procession from a funeral for Billie Pierce 67 a Preservation Hall pianist. Dancers on housing project balconies joined families waving as the parade moved to St Louis Cemetery. Neighbors recalled her as a key figure in the city music scene.
Chester M. Hill of Arlington will speak at Hope Church of Christ in a five day series October 6 through the 3rd. He has preached in the Fort Worth area over 20 years, expanding a Arlington congregation from 34 to more than 400 in four years. Hill began preaching in Ripley Oklahoma while a student at Oklahoma State University and has conducted evangelistic work including a Berlin campaign. Services Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. with Monday to Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Subjects include A Man After Gods Own Heart Jesus The Misunderstood Man and The Unsparing God.
W Edwin Cox public relations consultant for Lion Oil Company of El Dorado will speak at the Hope Lions Club luncheon at the Town and Country restaurant Monday. Cox will discuss How to Double Your Effectiveness in Dealing with People and be introduced by Jim Gunner. He has a long civic career and now serves as PR consultant after Lion Oil’s 1972 sale to TOSCO. Carl M Saunders, 83, Pulitzer Prize winner and former editor of The Jackson Citizen Patriot, died Wednesday in Grand Rapids.
All Around Town notes 32 Hempstead County citizens rehabilitated and placed in gainful employment during the 1973 74 fiscal year ending June 30. E Russell Baxter cites a total of 5263 Arkansans aided by Rehabilitation Services.
The Hope Optimist Club held its installation banquet at Town and Country restaurant. Dr. Jack Harrington installed officers including Paul Spears as president and Duffie Booth as vice president. New board members are William Garner Tom Impson and Ray Davis. Burtch named Optimist of the Year. Proceeds from community calendars support youth activities. Contact Paul Spears to buy calendars. In Ku-lin China locals rub saffron on their bodies to resemble a Buddha.
The Hope Lions Club will host the District 7-L Lions Fall conference Sunday at Red River Vocational Technical School with guest speaker Joe Mc Laughlin of Lions International. Attendees include Lions from Clark through Sevier Counties. registration starts 12:30 p.m. and dinner is at 5:30 p.m. priced six dollars per person including banquet.
