Kiwanis members in Hope held a Tuesday session to install officers for 1973 74 led by Kelsey Moore of Foreman Lt Governor Division 24 Mo Ark District. Gordon Renshaw was named president with Paul O Neal Rufus Herndon III as vice presidents Teddy Jones secretary Clifford Franks treasurer and a 12 member board. Guests included Steve Allen and David Bain Key Clubbers and Miss Teen Arkansas 1973 Sharon Parham spoke on community support from Hope.

On October 1 1973 Kiwanis clubs nationwide launched Enrich the Lives of the Aging to aid older citizens. Hope Kiwanis president Gordon Renshaw says the program, developed with the National Council on Aging, offers services such as Senior Volunteer, Meals on Wheels, transportation, health screening, and retirement planning seminars. Floyd Young joins as new member. Billy Bob White and Arch Wylie are this week’s birthday honorees.

In Alberta two towns New Norway and Gwynne with about 500 residents were evacuated after a hydrogen sulfide leak from a ruptured natural gas pipeline near New Norway. Police in gas masks ensured all residents left and no return date was given.

Mrs Susie R Johnson former Hope resident dies in Mena
Mrs. Susie R Johnson, 49, formerly of Hope, died at her home in Mena Tuesday. She is survived by her husband Dr. Charles S Johnson of Mena, two sons Randy and Tom of Mena, a brother Cecil Smith of Smackover, two sisters Mrs C D Johnson of Whittier California and Mrs Valeria McCauley of Odessa Texas, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Hope with Rev. Gerald W Trussell officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens with Herndon in charge.

Bomb threat halts Senate Watergate hearings briefly
The Senate Watergate hearings were adjourned for two hours after a bomb threat targeted the Caucus Room. Capitol police searched the room and, finding no device, also offered to search Ervin's room in the Old Senate Office Building as the hearing continued with Donald Segretti testifying. The room was cleared during the pause, then resumed after the search.
