Associated Press report details a presidential commission's call to repeal U S antismut laws drawing sharp backlash from Vice President Agnew who dismissed the report as not our baby while two dissenters argued for full repeal. The debate centers on obscenity and pornography and the impact on American culture and policy.
In New York AP report, Robert Pitofsky, new FTC consumer protection head, vows to use existing powers to curb false advertising and shoddy products. He criticizes past focus on trivia and aims for aggressive action in a mass production economy, noting 12,000 annual complaints.
Vice President Spiro Agnew warned of an erosion of decency abetted by radical liberals during a Western campaign stop in Salt Lake City. He disowned a Commission on Obscenity and Pornography report calling for repealing anti smut laws, saying the nation’s room for Main Street will not become Smut Alley while Nixon is president. He spoke at a $100-a-plate fundraiser for Rep. Launce J. Burton of Utah.
Compensation capped at 3600 dollars every two years plus 6 dollars daily during a special session and 0.05 dollars per mile for a Capitol round trip. Regular sessions allowed biennially, Governor alone can call a special session, and appropriations require only a simple majority.

The western parade opens the fair with a 4 p.m. Thursday downtown Hope procession and a Wing Ranch rodeo tonight at 8 o'clock in the Coliseum. Performances run Friday and Saturday nights. Midway gates opened early for School Day with reduced ride prices.

In Cairo, millions mourned President Nasser at his funeral as U N diplomacy urged resumption of Middle East talks. Seven Arab militants were freed with six hostages, including Leila Khaled, arriving for the funeral. The last six American hostages reached New York after release through Jordan and the Red Cross.
Hope Fire Department is midway through a Regional Fire School, the 17th such meet, with courses sponsored by the Arkansas Fireman's Association through Southwest Technical Institute at Fast Camden. Whit Murphey and Ralph Scantlin directed the first week, Gene Hendricks teaches this week, and participation includes Prescott, Texarkana, Foreman and Mineral Springs. Chief Cobb urges cooperation during Fire Prevention Week October 4 to 10 to promote fire safety at home as children bring household reports to check hazards.
City police reported that a thief entered A. Z. Turner’s store on South Main during the night through a back room and stole small change. Only the change appeared missing.
Cemeteries and streets overflowed with mourners as Gamal Abdel Nasser was buried in Cairo after a funeral that moved millions. Dignitaries wept, crowds chanted Nasser’s name, and a flag-covering the casket was torn. Anwar Sadat and Nasser’s sons publicly mourned, while a radio announcer broke down mid-broadcast. The ceremony moved from the mosque garden to a Nile island as a helicopter carried the leader’s coffin, watched by thousands along the funeral route.
In Belgrade Nixon and Yugoslav President Tito hold a two hour talks on world problems. Nixon urges nations to respect others rights and nonalignment as Yugoslavia hosts him in Kumrovec visit and address.
The Hempstead County United Fund Campaign begins with a breakfast at the Town & Country Restaurant on Monday October 5 at 6 30 a.m. Dr Don Freet and Druggist Doug Haney will serve as co directors and lead a drive to raise 25000 by October 31 with agencies including Salvation Army Boy Scouts of America Girl Scouts Red Cross United Cerebral Palsy and more.
