Phone Workers Prepare Strike Ballot at Southwestern Bell
In St Louis on November 30, CIO Communications Workers of America official Frank Lonergan said strike ballots are being printed for distribution to about 50,000 Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. workers. The ballots will be mailed unless contract talks yield a favorable turn. The contract expires at midnight tomorrow with a 30 day termination clause. A union vote would authorize bargaining officials to call a strike, not automatically trigger one, and the union seeks wage increases, job reclassifications, and improvements in the company health plan.
