Pine Seedlings to Be Planted in Hempstead County

Hempstead County landowners cooperating with the Terre Rouge Bodean Soil Conservation District will plant more than 250000 pine seedlings on idle land over the next weeks. John Keck of the U S Soil Conservation Service says trees include loblolly shortleaf and slash pine with loblolly and shortleaf bought from Bluir City State Nursery and slash distributed by the soil district. Spacing is about 12 by 6 feet yielding about 700 trees per acre. Pulpwood and fence posts may be exported in 10 to 12 years, with sawlogs and other products possible later.

Three Day Week in Mines Ordered by Lewis

John L. Lewis ordered a three day work week for most of the nation 400000 coal miners halting the three week truce. He told 80000 bar coal miners and bituminous diggers to work Monday Tuesday and Wednesday weekly starting next Monday until contracts with individual companies are signed. The move partially ends the strike though soft coal miners will resume Monday. Anthracite miners in Eastern Pennsylvania had been back since mid September soft coal miners worked only three weeks since Sept 19. The policy committee adopted a measure effective December 3 requiring mines to operate only three days per week with limited maintenance Thursday through Saturday.

Fire damages Anthony Mill with $100000 loss
