Budget study eyed to guide city personnel policy
City budget notes report to conduct a management study by the civil service commission to align personnel guidelines. The plan uses state matching funds, lowering cash outlay to about 500 dollars, with concerns about potential office setup in Hope and bureaucracy for fire and police projects. The council approved the measure. Also approved were bids on a patrol car and two sanitation truck chassis from Young Chevrolet. A second bid was disqualified for bid form errors. The council also declined funding for the Southside Child Development Center after Hempstead County’s 1976 allocation left a shortfall, amid City Mayor Strong’s remark about limited daylight in other matters.

Nazis on trial for war crimes in Sobibor and Belzec
The second war crimes case may take two years and targets Hackmann of Osnabrueck, Mrs. Ryan, and others. Hackmann, once sentenced to death, was paroled in 1955. Mrs. Ryan, who served at four camps from 1939 to 1945, faced Austrian conviction for mistreatment and imprisonment, later moved to the United States via Canada in 1957, married an American in 1958, and naturalized in 1964 after concealing wartime status. A Vienna hunter and affidavits from West Germany spurred years of legal action, including relinquishment of citizenship and a 1973 extradition decision by a Brooklyn court.
