Mrs. Mary Andrews Royston 81 died at her daughter Mrs J J Battle’s Fulton home Thursday. Funeral and burial were in Washington conducted by Dr John Williams. She was born at Washington Hempstead County, educated in St Louis, married Capt Charles E Royston who died earlier. She organized and led the C E Royston chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Fulton for 20 years and belonged to the D A R in Hope. Survived by five daughters, one son, three sisters and a brother.
The Highway Audit Commission referred a potential recovery from the Austin Bridge Co. to the attorney general over a $13 000 state payment to remove structures from the White River bridge right of way at Clarendon. Testimony by Clarendon contractor E T Bolas and Ed Bock was read, detailing prewar buildings and proposed razing costs.
Washington officials report House Rules Committee Chairman Pou hopes to move beyond Volstead Act revisions during the upcoming short session. In Arkansas, residents press the attorney general to confirm rights to hunt on the Mississippi west bank without Tennessee licenses amid arrests. City councilman Roy Anderson told the Rotary Club that revenues from the municipally owned water and light plant offset much of the city deficit. He noted a drop in the 5 mill property tax intake and outlined plans to seek self liquidating project financing from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a Fair Park swimming pool and parkway. He praised the RDC program for quick relief to Hempstead County and warned property owners about grass fires, citing fire department costs, while saluting Red Cross aid efforts in Arkansas.
Mrs. Julia McRae aged 86, mother of Hope residents including Mrs. W Kendall Lemley, Mrs. E B Greening, Mrs. J P Brundidge, R G McRae, and Charles McRae of Houston, is gravely ill at her daughter’s Edgewood street home as physicians reported Friday.
Kenosha Wisconsin reports that Charley Nash, head of Nash Motors, led the independent auto maker to a net profit for the first six months of 1932 joining General Motors in profits. McCarty notes tight overhead, no order no build policy, and reduced inventories while keeping workers employed as production dipped to 2500 cars per quarter.
Mrs Mary Holt aged 85 died Thursday night at her home five miles east of Washington. She was the widow of John W Holt who died nearly two years ago. She was buried Friday afternoon in the Washington cemetery. Surviving are two sons George Holt near Washington and Willie M Holt of Horatio. Mrs John Johnson of Hope is a sister in law.
Dr W R Anderson pastor of First Presbyterian church was ill with acute stomach trouble while a Hope hunting party hunted ducks on Grassy Lake. He refused to quit and was taken home as his condition worsened though early Friday he showed improvement but remained in bed.
Shirley Crank’s serving in the Miller county whisky case was overturned by the U S Circuit Court of Appeals in Omaha Nebraska. The reversal cites an unlawful search at Crank's Garland City home. The Texarkana court had fined Crank $10,000 and sentenced six years in prison. Attorneys Atkins and Stewart of Hope argued the appeal on October 4.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation approved relief loans to Arkansas Indiana and Missouri. Arkansas receives 287268 raising its total to 1319168. Indiana gets 5000 and Missouri 7900. The Arkansas loan supports 26 counties with destitution risks across the state.
A Philadelphia elections hearing reported that a Mueller Roosevelt watcher testified to illegal assistance at a polling place. He said an Elmer county employee handed voters envelopes containing $3 each, and that non residents were allowed to vote in the division.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union met at Mrs. Henry H. Stuart’s home on Thursday afternoon. Miss Mamie Twitchell led devotions from Psalm 103, the group discussed dues and new member alignment, and a state convention report was shared. Committees for the coming year were announced, and plans for a Dues Tea were noted.
