Magnolia Ark AP Mrs Almedia Elizabeth Chambers 40 mother of state son Melvin T Chambers of Magnolia died Wednesday at her Atlanta home in Columbia County She was the widow of Rev G G Chambers a Methodist minister.
Former Speaker of the House Samuel Rayburn battles incurable cancer of the lymph system. Four days after hospital admission he worsened with pneumonia, entering a coma before revival with antibiotics. Vice President Lyndon Johnson visited at his bedside as President Kennedy made a lengthy trip to discuss politics.
In Plumerville, Arkansas, Billy Bob Bell, 30, was wounded by several shotgun blasts during a dispute over a lawsuit tied to an estate. Bell’s uncle Sam Bell, 75, was held in Conway County Jail as authorities investigated the incident. Bell was treated at Tilton Hospital and listed in stable condition.
The forecast notes cooler conditions this afternoon and tonight with limited temperature changes into Friday. Central Arkansas will be partly cloudy with a cool spell and increasing clouds Saturday, while the northeast and northwest districts stay mostly cloudy and cooler tonight with little Friday change. Southeast and southwest Arkansas expect cloudy to partly cloudy skies, cooling tonight and a warmer Saturday afternoon.
House Speaker Sam Rayburn who died today had visited Arkansas many times as a speech maker at Democratic events. His last public Arkansas appearance was September 9, 1960, at the Democratic Blaze Convention in Little Rock, after speaking at a October 30, 1959, fundraising dinner. Gov. Faubus and Rep. Mills offered reminiscences. Rayburn mentored Mills and presided on many occasions.
Two airliners crashed on a Logan International cross runway in Boston, injuring fifteen severely. Northeast Airlines Viscount jet prop lost the entire aft section while National Airlines DC6 halted with nose gear broken and fuselage cracked.
Bitter winds swept snow covered countryside across New Mexico Texas Colorado Oklahoma and Kansas. Blizzard conditions shut U S highways and eased only as skies cleared in Texas and New Mexico. Subfreezing temps and slick roads lingered with fresh snow up to a foot in places and drifts in the New Mexico mountains.
