Murder suicide attempt under investigation in Bentonville

Police in Bentonville said the investigation into an apparent murder-death by own action attempt continues after a Sunday incident at a home. A woman was found with head trauma and a man with a slashed throat, and both were hospitalized. Their 15-year-old daughter called police. In a separate case, M ercia Riggins of Little Rock faces charges in a stabbing death earlier Sunday.

A Calgary man Paul Cini hijacked an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Toronto stopping in Calgary. He demanded 1.5 million dollars and a flight to Ireland claiming IRA ties. The plane diverted twice to Great Falls Montana before landing. crew subdued him and authorities detonated a suspected dynamite package.

Work Resumed on Tax Cut Measure

The Senate passed 59 to 24 a child care tax deduction expansion for dual worker couples with children 14 and under. Tunney amendment raises joint income limit to $18,000, adding about $100 million to the bill’s cost. Deduction up to $4,800 yearly for child care and domestic help remains, with debates on campaign finance riders and Social Security add ons ongoing.

Six Fatal Arkansas Highways Crash Toll Rises

Jury Selection Begins in Wampler Murder Trial

In DeWitt Arkansas jury selection starts today for the trial of three youths charged in the November 7 1970 slaying of 27 year old Wynne rice farmer Jimmy Wayne Wampler. A fourth youth 16 named Joe Kagebien was found guilty of murder earlier this summer and sentenced to death. the governor has stayed execution pending appeal.

Investigates Shooting Death in Jonesboro Arkansas

Craighead County authorities continue their investigation into the shooting death of Roy Tang, 32, of Jonesboro. Police report he was shot several times with a .32 caliber pistol. the body was found in a bedroom. A person has been taken into custody for questioning.

Des Arc to Vote on Ordinances

Des Arc Arkansas voters will decide in a special election on November 30 on two ordinances. A dog leash law and the condemnation or acquisition of 430 acres for city use were approved by the city council and now go to voters for final approval before taking effect.

Rules Error in Case of Malpractice

Arkansas Supreme Court ruled Circuit Court Judge Digby erred by limiting a malpractice deposition to factual issues. Richard W. Rickett Jr. sued Dr. Harry Hayes, a Little Rock plastic surgeon, over a broken jaw from 1966. The court said expert testimony from Dr. James Stuckey was pivotal and the deposition restriction hindered cross examination and trial fairness.

Escapee Caught Near Marshall

Billy Gene Eaton aged 23 escaped Sunday from Searcy County Jail Marshall Arkansas using a hacksaw blade smuggled into his cell. He was arrested shortly after while hitchhiking on U S 65 north of Marshall. Eaton faced burglary and grand larceny charges.

Court Protects Rail Workers in Merger Case

The Supreme Court ruled 4 to 3 that the Interstate Commerce Commission must review merger deals to shield railroad workers. Justice Douglas wrote for the majority, saying federal law requires ICC oversight to protect workers on the Sandusky Line, acquired in 1964 by Norfolk and Western. Justice Blackmun dissented, noting Congress’s primacy.
