Judge Odell Horton in the Criminal Court experiments with weekend sentences for minor offenses to preserve confinement penalties while allowing continued work and family income. If not abused, other court divisions may adopt this useful sentencing variation tried in other cases.
Doctors said one of the five quintuplets born to Mrs. Trene Hanson faced breathing trouble but showed improvement. The Britain birth, linked to fertility drug use, produced the largest multiple birth in Britain since previous sextuplets. Nicola Jane, the second Quint, prompted cautious concern at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.
The Nixon administration will pressure about 130 holdout southern school districts to desegregate now, while 109 districts pledging to desegregate next fall face no new push. Thousands joined the second Vietnam moratorium protests across the country while some Washington demonstrations turned violent. Police used tear gas on a militant group at the Soviet Embassy site. 27 arrests reported and injuries to police and demonstrators. Smaller incidents occurred in New York and California with large peaceful marches continuing near the White House and in Portland, San Francisco, and Stanford.
The House Appropriations Committee approved a $200000 appropriation for a control tower at Pine Bluff airport as part of the Transportation Department bill. Rep. Rubin, 30, and six co-defendants face charges of conspiracy to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
Apollo 12 lifted from Cape Kennedy as a violent thunderstorm lashed the pad. Commander Conrad, Gordon, and Bean reset breakers to restore power after a prime electrical system fuse blew and the on board computer froze. They checked the lunar lander electronics and found a flood light switch stuck on, then cut power to it. Crew remained optimistic despite the scare and anticipated moon landing at 1:53 a.m. EST on Wednesday.
Washington AP reports that as nuclear arms talks with the Soviet Union open in Helsinki, Secretary of State Rogers says a balanced security strategy may require lifting or refashioning secrecy on military matters. He lists three aims: limit deployment of strategic arms, halt the arms race spiral, and reduce the risk of nuclear war.
