A Texas sedan headed west in downtown Hope carries bright-colored leaves from Arkansas, reflecting local appreciation that states and regions differ in how they value foliage. The scene hints at a seasonal leaf gathering and transport between states as autumn colors arrive.
Manager Henry Seamans of the Saenger theater backs the Melody Maids high school choral group to present six art films for the Hope audience starting with Interrupting Melody about Arkansas opera star Marjorie Lawrence on November 16 17. Tickets in advance cover all six shows at 3 with 7K at the door and a 20 percent commission to the Melody Maids.
Robert A Beard aged 81 longtime Hempstead County resident died at his home on the Hope Patmos road Saturday. Funeral services were held at 1 30 p m Sunday at Herndon Cornelius Chapel by the Rev L T Lawrence. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
John Gilbert Graham, 23, of Denver, was arrested on federal charges tied to the bombing of a United Air Lines DC-6B that killed 44 people including his mother Daisy King. Investigators say he insured his mother for 37 000 and planned the crime after prior forgery convictions. He awaits arraignment with a 100 000 bond, while murder charges may follow locally.
Wier Owens of Hope died at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock on November 13 after a long illness. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 1:00 at First Methodist Church with Rev. Keeley officiating. He leaves a wife, one son Terry, a daughter JoJo Owens, three brothers and two sisters.
Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Yocom of Atlanta Texas formerly from Louisiana will be special guests at the First Pentecostal Church November 16 with Rev Yocom delivering the principal message. Services begin at 7 30 p m All are invited to attend this service.

United Press reports the November 1 Longmont Colorado airliner crash marks the first U S commercial aviation sabotage traced to a deliberate plot. It notes prior plots in Los Angeles and Canada, with cases involving insured motives and spousal disputes.
Senator Morse of Oregon said he favors a wide open Democratic convention next year and will avoid any presidential primary clash in his state. He rejects a favorite son approach and says he is running only for the Senate. Oregon’s May 18 primary could list aspirants from both parties with petition rules allowing names on ballots without consent.
Newark. Mr and Mrs Robert Dvorin stored spare change and small bills in a two gallon whiskey bottle and a bedroom closet. A burglar broke the locked closet during the weekend and stole about $5 000 in money.
Countess Dagmar von Bern Storff and cousin Diether Ebeler ride a Vespa tour starting Sept 22, 1952, aiming to document folklore for radio. They crossed 30 countries and 18 U.S. states totaling 63,000 miles, facing tickets and seven flats, plus eight marriage proposals amid adventures.
President Eisenhower left Washington with Mrs. Eisenhower for a six week stay at the Gettysburg farm to recuperate from his heart attack. He traveled by auto at 10 42 a m and was joined by Mrs. Eisenhower who wore a blue coat and matching accessories. The trip aims to decide whether he will seek another term as he resumes some duties before a family celebration at Gettysburg.
The Hempstead County Industrial Foundation has been organized with a charter from the Secretary of State. At least 15 citizens signed the original document, including Harrell C. Hall and Frank F. King, with Albert Graves elected temporary President and George Peck temporary Vice President. The office will be the Chamber of Commerce as Hope works to meet Arkansas Industrial Development Commission requirements and attract industries. A group led by Manager Carl A. Bryan left to interview potential industry partners.

George Smith, a 31 year old North American Aviation test pilot, survived a supersonic bailout from a Sabre jet on February 26. He endured 40 G deceleration, parachute deployment, and severe injuries including liver damage. After months of treatment his knee stiffened and he cannot drink alcohol. he plans to fly again, aiming to travel 2000 miles per hour.
A 41 year old plumbing contractor described as an ideal family man shot his wife Mildred Buckethal 40 and children Bonnie Lynn 12 Cynthia 10 and Thomas 8 in their Shorewood home before setting fires and killing himself in the early morning hours. Police said he loaded a .22 pistol after pouring motor oil on the kitchen floor and killed his family one by one. Fire at his downtown plumbing supply store preceded the home attack. The motive remained unknown.
Geneva reports the possibility of admitting 17 nations to the United Nations as the East West talks hint at a broader accommodation. U S Secretary of State Dulles and Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov discussed the issue, with Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. confirming the United States would drop active opposition to several Soviet satellites and seek 13 Western allies in.
Argentina's provisional President Eduardo Lonardi was ousted in a bloodless coup. Maj. Gen. Pedro Eugenio Aramburu was sworn in to succeed him, aiming to root out totalitarian influence and restore democracy. Lonardi's followers decried the move as treason while exiled Peronist supporters predicted further changes and possible clashes. Crowds cheered democracy over dictatorship as Aramburu assumed office.
Mrs Grayvee Hagood told police she felt a draft while at a department store counter and found her skirt cut from waist to hem in multiple places. John Walsh, 32, a shipping clerk, confessed an urge to slash skirts to ribbons and was arrested.
A dawn fuel-tank explosion aboard the Navy radar ship Searcher 125 miles southeast of New York killed three sailors and injured two. The severely injured were airlifted to New York, with one dying en route. The two dead were described as completely carbonized. The Searcher, a converted Liberty ship with advanced radar gear, recently began a new Atlantic patrol tour costing about four million dollars.
Mrs Alice Ward Wilson, formerly of Hope, died Saturday in the Confederate Home in Little Rock. She is survived by three brothers Clyde Ward Callion James S Ward Coffeyville Kansas and Fred H Ward Stephens and three sisters Mrs M E McLarty Louisiana Mrs J M Ingram Prescott and Mrs C E McKay Tyler Texas. Funeral services were held at 3 pm Sunday at Aerndon Cornelius Chapel by Rev Wesley Lindsey and burial followed at Shover Springs.
The first deer of the 1955 season was shot in the Bois d Are Creek area by Ernest Turner of Oakhaven, a seven point buck. Hunters were urged by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to study the Ten Commandments of Safety before hunting any game this season. Henry Bowden of Hope was initiated into Alpha Zeta at the University of Arkansas, one of eight students in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics to receive membership based on leadership, fellowship, scholarship and character. Oglesby School PTA dinner will be held Friday from 5 to 8 pm at the school, tickets $1 for adults and 50 cents for children, to fund school items. Arkansas Razorbacks football fans enjoyed two big televised wins over Texas teams, praised as outstanding.
A large truck carrying about 83 Mexican cotton workers hit a bridge railing on Highway 67 near Prescott around 11 last night. One man, Pedro Garrolo of Laredo Durango, Mexico, died. Dozens were injured with 17 to 25 in critical condition. Driver Wayne Keller said he fell asleep at the wheel. The truck overturned scattering riders along the highway. At Prescott Hospital 45 were treated. 28 remained mid day Monday. Six were taken to Garden and 16 to Hempstead Memorial Hospital. Most aboard were injured. The workers were en route home. Adlai E Stevenson drafts a message on his 1956 political plans and will announce tomorrow if he seeks the Democratic presidential nomination. He has started forming a staff including a Truman aide for press, a newspaperman as secretary, and a former congressional candidate for speeches. His team works in three rooms on Lasalle Street.
Mrs. Leonard Louckas 25 daughter of Artie Knighton of Hempstead County died in a Saturday night wreck near Linden Texas. Her husband and three children were injured. The body was returned to Hope for burial with services at 3 p m today at Herndon Cornelius Chapel by Rev Wesley Thomason. Burial follows at Rose Hill Cemetery.
