A Philadelphia Naval Hospital psychologist profiles the traits of a safe driver as courteous, sober, temperate, peaceful at home, fond of poetry and plants, and disinclined to gambling or fighting. The list reads like a saintly ideal, yet few fit it entirely, many of the safe drivers have died in accidents anyway.
GLENCOE Minnesota reports six Minnesota high school students killed in a grade crossing crash near Plato. Sheriff Leon Odegaard names five identified victims Milton Brelje and Maurice Olson both about 18 from Plato Robert Luedtke 18 and Roger Frauendiest 17 from New Auburn and Margaret Fuller about 18 from Plato. The sixth girl's body is too mutilated for immediate ID.
In a joint United States Canadian maneuver off San Diego a Douglas Skyraider plunged into the destroyer USS Hopewell. The crash killed five, four on the ship and crew aboard the plane, while five sailors were burned and evacuated to a naval hospital.
ALEXANDRIA LA Senator Ellender and three committee members proposed trading surplus U S farm products with Russia even on a barter basis to move cotton rice dairy and tung oil samples through regular channels. They argued the State Department hinders surplus sales abroad and urged wider trade with Russia and satellite nations as a goodwill move.
The Associated Press reports mild changes with a warm trend in the Western states and much of the South. Cool belt readings were in the 30s to 40s, Pennsylvania in the 20s, Appalachians below 20, while Pacific Coast states logged 50s and 60s after yesterday’s 70s and 30s. Red Bluff 72 this morning, 88 yesterday. Florida remained mild. Texas cold snap weakened. Central Florida saw heavy rains overnight with Daytona Beach and Orlando each over an inch in six hours. Cloudy with light rain in parts of the Northwest Midwest New York and Gulf States.
About 65 year old Will Pritts of Banks was killed instantly when a tree fell and struck his head while he was cutting timber on a farm at the Lanark junction in Bradley County.
In Milwaukee the northwest synod convicted Rev. Victory K. Wrigley on five of six doctrinal charges at a trial, recommending suspension from his pulpit. Wrigley, pastor of Gethsemene Church in Brookfield, did not attend the proceedings or prior hearings. The board found him to deny Scripture’s objectives, misinterpret Lutheran confessions, deny the Virgin birth, deny the Resurrection, and repudiate the Lord's Supper, with original sin charge left undecided.
Tom Carrell an automobile dealer and head of Kefauver for President Clubs of California says he hopes to obtain permission to place Kefauvers name on the California primary ballot next June Kefauver told him he would be in California early next month and Carrell expects good news to move forward with the nomination in California.
Ronnie Strucer aged seven died in a hospital after a farm accident near Leashville Mississippi County. He fell from a combine driven by his father and was crushed beneath the wheels during a late yesterday incident on the family farm.
James D. Montgomery a Hope native and early Star of Hope worker returns Friday to visit his parents the Rev. and Mrs J D Montgomery at Bradley. Now a courthouse reporter for the San Diego Evening Tribune he spent the last eight years with that paper after ten years in San Diego and a prior career at Texarkana El Dorado Fort Smith and Little Rock newspapers.
Arkansas Governor Faubus rejects efforts to dominate the Public Service Commission in the AP and L rate dispute. He urged the company to present a solid case for any rate increase while noting politics should not drive decisions. The case, already appealed to the state Supreme Court, involves a proposed 1,090,010 hike atop 3,900,000 in bonds. Faubus criticizes opponent Rommel and notes past personnel changes at the PSC. Chairman Robinson dismisses any interference claim.
In Blytheville three teenagers received three-year suspended sentences after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of Lettie Gilliam, a 55 year old woman struck by a stone on a Blytheville street. Hugh Mahoney and Jimmie Koonce, both 18 from Joiner, and Milton Burkes, 17 from Burdette, faced circuit judge Charles Light. Lettie Gilliam died from complications of an eye injury suffered July 9.
Washington observers say Moscow showed strength at the Geneva foreign ministers conference, yielding nothing to the West. Russia’s stance risks widening Middle East influence and complicates German unification, with Adenauer’s illness aiding Moscow’s leverage. The Geneva spirit is seen as empty, as no durable agreement emerged on major issues.
President Eisenhower spent his first full day back at the Executive Mansion since seven weeks in a Denver hospital with no appointments listed. He plans to visit Gettysburg farm Monday and ease back into a full schedule, saying he is happy to be home and that his doctors have given him a parole, not a pardon, as recovery from the heart attack continues. The doctors say the final outcome will take weeks to determine.
Washington reports that foreign policy is shaping as a major campaign issue for 1956. Adlai Stevenson criticized the Eisenhower administration in Charlottesville and Philadelphia Democrat James Finnegan may be named campaign manager.
In Los Angeles a jury awarded Virginia Maederlein 28 three thousand dollars in damages for a mattress spring injury that she says cut her back and required surgery. She had sued for ten thousand dollars.
Governor Meyner and Margaret Truman plan a date tomorrow at Princeton University. They will attend the Yale Princeton football game as guests of University president Harold Dodds. Meyner has said he is not a confirmed bachelor.
Edmund Orgill a wealthy businessman won the Memphis mayoral race in his first bid, defeating veteran politician S Watkins Overton. Orgill 56 led from the start with 51789 votes to Overton 33154, both Democrats, in the non Crump era election where Overton had Crump's old support but no clear issues emerged.
The Agriculture Department reported U S farm output near record highs for 1955 with corn at 3,182,870,000 bushels up 2 percent from last month and 7 percent above 1954. Sorghum, barley, oats, soybeans, hay, milk and eggs set all time highs while cotton and rice show variations.
Adlai E Stevenson plans to accuse Republicans of fuddling foreign policy and bowing to big business. He is expected to announce his presidential bid in Chicago next Tuesday and will outline foreign policy views in a Charlottesville speech aired by ABC.
The St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank reports that department store sales in the Eight Federal Reserve District averaged seven percent higher last week than the same week a year earlier. Gains occurred in St. Louis and Little Rock by twelve percent, while Louisville fell five percent and Memphis declined two percent.
A post office package whirred as it slid down the chute. Police were alerted by Supt. Sam Weingarten. Demolition officer Sgt. Erwin Yhde and two others opened the package in the parking lot and found a battery powered child’s toy washing machine whirring inside.
Burglars cleaned out stock at a new Chicago men’s clothing shop yesterday prompting owners to replace a grand opening sign with one reading closed for inventory. No injuries reported as police investigated the break in.

At Stanbury Wyoming a rock and coal cave in trapped three men in Union Coal Co No 7 mine. George Chenchar 54 was believed dead after being crushed while Louis Julius 38 escaped after seven hours under debris. John Nesbitt mine foreman died nearby. Gustavos Lopez and Claude Nichols survived, with Nichols noting silence during the collapse.
Federal conciliators arranged a first bargaining session Monday to resolve a wage strike by 17 000 CIO and AFL workers at International Shoe Co and 9 000 Brown Shoe Co employees. The walkout spans 60 plants in Missouri Arkansas Illinois Tennessee Kentucky and Indiana. The unions seek a 12 percent raise over two years, up from the current 1.22 per hour, plus a pension plan study.
Vernon Anderson says he would have won reelection if all who urged him to run had voted. A spring petition gathered 18,000 signatures, but Tuesday's tally showed he received 15,937 votes versus his opponent's 16,359 in Hammond Indiana.
