Lightning Strikes Multiple Churches In Valley Area

A storm caused lightning to strike several churches Sunday, starting with Katia Catholic Church and later hitting Plow Valley Baptist Church. Firefighters battled blazes as transformers sparked and power lines burned, injuring no one reported on arrival. The incident disrupted services and caused minor structural damage to the fuse boxes and surrounding grounds.

Texarkana Drive-In Killings Leave Two Dead

A Texarkana drive-in shooting left two dead and a third seriously wounded. Samuel Richard Surber, 38, shot his wife and another man’s wife then killed himself. A 14 year old daughter and a 6 year old boy witnessed the attack, with Mrs Surber and Mrs Louis McClure among those shot. The wounded woman underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition.

Woman Shot by Husband in Hope. 54 Dead

Mrs Lamour McElroy 54 of Hope was shot about 10 45 Saturday night by her estranged husband Fred McElroy 68 in a back room at 320 East Liu Street. He surrendered to Officer Ward and is jailed on pending charges. Funeral plans set for Tuesday in Houston with memorials to the Girl Scout Building Fund.

Weak Cold Front Hits Arkansas Keeps State Mild

A very weak cold front chilled Northwest Arkansas this morning while the rest of the state stayed well above freezing. Overnight lows ranged from 29 at Gilbert to 49 at Texarkana as a low pressure center moved toward Arkansas from Kansas. The U S Weather Bureau said cooler, cloudy and dry conditions would continue for a day or two with no more than a 10 percent chance of light showers. Highs Sunday reached 80 at Fort Smith, but most areas stayed in the 10s and no rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours ending 7 a.m. today.

AP dispatch from Saigon reports North Vietnamese regulars pressing U S defense lines near Dak To in the central highlands. U S artillery and helicopter assaults persist after nightfall as U S and allied forces fend off a potentially significant action. Man Held in Woman's Abduction in Texarkana

Johnny Porter, about 26, of Texarkana, was held for questioning in the abduction of a Texarkana woman and the wounding of her 10 year old son. The incident occurred when a man forced entry, abducted the woman at gunpoint, and shot the boy before fleeing. a car stop near Prescott led to the mother’s safe return.
