Keith Fuller, longtime Associated Press executive, was appointed president and general manager by the AP Board in New York succeeding Wes Gallagher who retired. Fuller, 53, has led AP operations since May and previously served as vice president and deputy general manager after 27 years with AP. He supervised Little Rock bureau coverage of the 1957 integration crisis that won a Pulitzer Prize.
Federal investigators are expected to probe a 1975 legal fee paid to Atty. Gen. Jim Guy Tucker by Lonoke Production Credit Association. Tucker traveled to California and Hawaii to interview more than 20 potential co-signers and billed PCA $1,000 plus expenses. the probe extends to recent Lonoke PCA activities amid indictments of three PCA officials.
In Burt Elementary Detroit a 46 year old teacher Miss McCaster was fatally shot in her classroom during an English lesson. Police arrested her estranged husband Al J Lewis 46 on open charges hours later.
President elect Jimmy Carter wraps up a five day retreat at St Simons Island Georgia after naming his transition staff and planning travel back to Plains. Press secretary Jody Powell says one plane will suffice for the return aboard a chartered jet and that Carter will work from a Department of Health Education and Welfare suite on Capitol Hill beginning Wednesday. Ford offers pre inauguration office space at Lafayette Square and Signal Corps is installing a communications center in Plains for Carter's incoming administration.
In Geneva Rhodesian black nationalists demand a maximum 12 month transition to black majority rule. U.S. officials cite other positions urging 18 months. Salisbury marks 11 years of independence as Smith rings the Liberty Bell amid war and diplomatic tensions with Britain over Rhodesia’s future.
Gary Mark Gilmore faces a firing squad execution scheduled for 8 a.m. at the Utah State Prison, the first U.S. execution since 1967. The Utah Supreme Court cleared the way after dismissing stays, while Gov. Rampton weighs any further stay options.
