The Associated Press reports a dry mild start to the week in Arkansas with drier air spreading southeastward. Precipitation ended around 1 a.m. and skies cleared from the west. Rain totals over the prior 24 hours included 1.42 inches at Little Rock and 1.17 inches at another site.

A Seaboard Coast Line freight train struck a car near Pittsview Alabama at a crossing lacking warning lights or gates. Five people in the vehicle, including two Columbus Georgia children, were killed. The victims were Paul Sheppard 44 and his granddaughter Quanda Sheppard both of Fort Myers Florida and Rachel Mae Howard 13 Delores Howard 11 Michele M Howard 9 of Columbus Georgia. The accident occurred at a cross sign without safety devices.
