President Roosevelt said he had received no direct word from Gov. Thomas E. Dewey since the election. Dewey had conceded defeat early Wednesday and sent a radio message wishing Roosevelt well. Roosevelt, at Hyde Park, continued work and sent a telegram thanking Dewey for the kind message.
President Roosevelt arrived in Washington from Hyde Park to begin a new term amid rain and crowds. He thanked workers for helping win the war as Vice President Wallace and Truman rode with him through a cheering, billowing parade toward the White House.
The National War Fund needs 6 percent more to reach its Hempstead county quota as Chairman James H. Jones and Treasurer Roy Anderson renew their call for prompt final donations. Spring Hill Fulton and other communities have not reported and some Hope merchants have not completed canvasses. They urge all to turn lists in to Treasurer Anderson at once before the final tabulation and fund close on the 1944 drive.
T. B. Bowden, former Hope resident, died early Friday on a train heading to Hope from Memphis. He had suffered poor health for some time and died suddenly. Survived by one son Alton Bowden of Murfreesboro and five brothers plus three sisters. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Mrs George T Crews of Hope contributes two poems to The Muse of 1944 a national anthology edited by Ethel R Forbes in New York and sponsored by Clement Wood The poems are Id Rather Wear Your Rose Today and To Spring She also contributed to Poems for Radio and says the forthcoming anthology has given her more encouragement than she had hoped for.
Armistice day events will be held Sunday at 2 PM in Hempstead county courthouse. The program includes Advancing of Colors, opening prayer by Dr. Thomas Brewster, songs by the Hope High School Band, and the State Commander Dwight Crawford giving an address. The program closes with Singers and Taps before dismissal.
London reports that 1 350 American aircraft attacked Cologne and Frankfurt regions today, striking jet bases, transport hubs and factories. Bombers include 750 Flying Fortresses and Liberators with 606 escort fighters, targeting rail yards and war industries at Cologne and Frankfurt. RAF Mosquitos also attacked multiple German and Dutch transport targets.
A. A. Albritton reports no rent control in Hope Arkansas but notes it can be reinstated by sufficient letters to OPA state headquarters. He cites discussions with District Director Robt P Hall and urges Hope residents to write in support, with letters to Little Rock. November 10, 1944.
Japanese broadcasts claimed the capture today of Kweilin and Liuchow in China. Domei said the Chinese 31st army surrendered at noon in Kweilin, a strategic city in Kwangsi. Chinese sources warned of pincers closing as Japanese forces advanced from the west and north toward Liuchow, risking a split across China.
General MacArthur announced 35000 Japanese troops reinforced Leyte, indicating a longer, harder campaign. Reports note Japanese reinforcements arriving after initial landings and heavy fighting around Ormoc, with American air and ground forces engaging coastal shipping and enemy positions as tails of a protracted campaign emerge.
British and American forces report a three day advance of about 10 miles along a 55 mile arc around Metz. Patton’s Third Army captured Chateau-Salins and nearby towns while heavy bombers and Thunderbolt aircraft disrupted German positions. French and Belgian theaters see continued pressure near the Saar and Moselle with bridgeheads expanding and German counterattacks repulsed.
HAL BOYLE reports American troops in Germany recount lighter moments amid war hardships. Covington Kentucky private William G Mashburn lost his pants three times to German artillery while aiding a command post and taking cover. Multiple soldiers survive near misses including Staff Sgt Frank V Leeper buried twice in foxholes and Pfc Ernest Jenico using a decoy tactic to reach friendly lines. Mortar fire by Germans killed two snipers at a factory with Staff Sgt Francis Courville scoring long range hits at over 600 yards.
Last minute instructions from the Postoffice Department in Washington cancel yesterday's announcement by Postmaster Robert M. Wilson that the Hope office would operate on a curtailed schedule Saturday which is Armistice Day. All windows at the local post office will operate full time Saturday and there will be city mail delivery both morning and afternoon. But there will be no rural mail delivery this being controlled by act of congress.
Washington announced two Arkansans were killed and four wounded. Killed were Othello Atkinson AMM 3-c son of Mr and Mrs Elbert Atkinson of Houston and Capt Carl D Ferguson husband of Mrs Carl D Ferguson of 230 Missouri Avenue West Memphis. Wounded were Phc A C Beebe son of Mr and Mrs Acy Beebe of Marked Tree.
Russian forces under Marshal Malinovsky pierced the lower defenses along the upper Tisza and severed the Budapest Miskolcz rail line. A vast infantry armored salient moved westward toward German panzer units, threatening to outflank Budapest from the southeast and funnel a winter campaign to reduce the capital.
President Roosevelt said he, Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin want to hold another war chiefs meeting when they can arrange it. No time or place is set and details will not be disclosed until the leaders arrive at the conference, which remains secret until then.
