The National Weather Service notes a slight chance of rain across Arkansas through Thursday. The east region faces the highest likelihood at 30 percent today and Thursday, while the rest of the state has about 2 percent chances. The northeast portion is singled out in the forecast.

Groveside services for Mrs. Corene Watkins, 56, are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill cemetery with Rev. L Bennie Beard officiating. She resided in Texarkana and is survived by three sisters Florene Tyree of Hope, Ethel Walker of Dallas, Lizgie Royston of Denver. two brothers Worthey Watkins of Fresno and John. and numerous nieces and nephews. Millard McBay, 87, died Sunday in Kansas City where he lived. A Nashville native, he was a retired oil company mechanic, WWII veteran, and Methodist. Surviving are wife Louella Beacon McBay of Kansas City. sons Marvin and Gary of Kansas City. daughter Cheryl Smith of Grandview. parents T H and Mrs McBay of Mineral Springs. sisters Elsie Avery of Mineral Springs and Ruby White of Lockesburg. and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bluff Springs cemetery near Mineral Springs with Rev. Bruce Bean and Rev. Elmer Hartness officiating. Burial under the Latimes Funeral Service of Nashville.
Roger Bates associate agent for Hempstead County Extension Service spoke at the Hope Lions Club meeting at the Sheraton Inn. He described his career from Miller County to Hempstead County and discussed 4H Club activities, youth projects, and slides from the Led District Livestock Show. Plans were announced for a Bi Centennial Bowl game fundraiser benefiting Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind, with charter bus plans due by November 10.
In Beirut both sides resume partial calm as a paycheck truce takes hold. Civilian workers and gunmen collect wages while security forces remove roadblocks and monitor mortar clearances. Premier Karami appeals for workers to return to work, and aid flows from the U.S. and Gulf states to support hospitals, food, and relief.

Rescue efforts continue at first light over the Gulf of Mexico for nine crewmen missing since a Bell 212 helicopter from Marlin One disappeared near Intracoastal City. About 15 helicopters and a flotilla of boats sweep a 60 mile area after debris and a life raft were found. Coast Guard notes a partial distress signal and suggests some may have survived if they reached life rafts.
